Holiday homes in Ronda

Ronda is one of the oldest towns in Andalusia and even in all of Spain. Not only that, it’s also one of the most special places in the region. Ronda is built on a huge rocky plateau with huge ramparts ("murrallas"), in a mountainous area at 2,500 metres above sea level, where the ancient Guadelevín river flows through an enormous gorge, splitting both the plateau and the town in two. Ronda is one of the many picturesque ‘white villages’ that are so typical in inland Andalusia. The white-painted houses with coloured window frames and ornate chimneys are all worth a photo. This also makes Ronda one of the most visited villages in Andalusia. It can be quite busy in July and August, but Ronda is also a fantastic destination outside the holiday season.

Sights in Ronda

Ronda is actually one big attraction. The old centre – ‘La Ciudad’ – consists of a maze of charming streets, alleys and squares. Here, you’ll find a museum, the beautiful Santa Maria church and a mosque from the time of Moorish rule. A little further away is the Plaza de Toros, one of Spain's oldest bullrings (1758) and the cradle of modern bullfighting. Other sights are the bridges of Ronda, including Puente Nuevo and Puente Viejo (New Bridge and Old Bridge). Puente Nuevo is arguably one of the most photographed bridges in Europe. Near the Old Bridge, on the edge of the city walls, are the Jardines de Cuenca, and the views of Ronda from these spectacular terraced gardens are breath-taking. If you want to do some shopping, you can go to Carrera Espinel, the main shopping street in Ronda, which runs all the way to the Plaza de Toros and has everything you need for an afternoon of shopping.

Interesting facts about Ronda

  • It’s almost impossible to count all the sights in Ronda. Just some random examples: the Baños Árabes (the Arab bathhouse), Convento de Santa Domingo (Convent of Saint Dominic), Fuente de los 8 Caños (fountain with 8 water jets), Palacio de Mondragón (the palace of a Moroccan king), and so on...
  • The gorge that splits Ronda in two is called "El Tajo" (which is the name given to a gash or cut made by an tool, such as an axe). El Tajo is 500 metres long, 50 metres wide and about 100 metres deep.
  • Ronda is also the name of a municipality in the Philippines (in the province of Cebu) and in the United States (in the state of North Carolina).
  • Famous writers like Ernest Hemmingway and Orson Welles lived in Ronda for years and described the beauty of the area.
