Holiday homes in the city of Paramaribo

Paramaribo is the vibrant capital of Suriname, and a holiday home in Paramaribo is a great way to discover the colourful city. Here, you can witness how people in Suriname live and work. The colourful houses could sometimes do with a lick of paint, but one thing is certain, Paramaribo is a fantastic city. The colours, the smells, the historic monuments and even the links to the Netherlands, which can be seen in everything.

Visit Fort Zeelandia

You should definitely pay a visit to the former Dutch Fort Zeelandia. The fort was once an important defence work on the Suriname River and now houses a museum. The Dutch built their houses and buildings around the fort in the 17th century, and street names in the centre still bear typical Dutch names such as "Gravenstraat", "Heerenstraat" and "Domineestraat". From the fort, you can walk to the colourful Waterkant, where the Dutch ships used to arrive. Now, it’s a great place to go shopping at the local market and enjoy the most delicious Suriname cuisine.

One big attraction

Paramaribo is actually one big attraction. The heart of the city is the Independence square, which is surrounded by the city’s main government buildings. Behind Independence square, you’ll find the Governor's residence with the Palm Garden behind it, a beautiful city park with impressive royal palms. A little further, on the Henck Arronstraat, is St. Peter and Paul’s Cathedral, which is made entirely of wood. The church needs regular maintenance because the wood is quite fragile due to termites.

Easy and affordable when you rent through Micazu

The Paramaribo Zoo, the statue of Queen Wilhelmina, the beautiful mosque and synagogue that stand peacefully next to each other – when you rent a holiday home in Paramaribo you’ll never get bored. And a holiday home in Paramaribo doesn’t have to be expensive. With Micazu, you book directly with the owner. Convenient, quick and for an English price.

Interesting facts about Paramaribo:

  • Paramaribo was probably founded in 1631 by two Dutchmen as a trade mission.
  • The trade mission was later taken over by the English, who built a fort: Fort Willoughby.
  • When the area was conquered by a Dutch expedition from Zeeland, the fort was renamed Fort Zeelandia.
  • The name Paramaribo is probably a corruption of ‘Parmirbo’, the name of an Indian village.
  • The only university in Suriname is located in Paramaribo: the Anton de Kom University of Suriname.
