Paramaribo is actually one big attraction. The heart of the city is the Independence square, which is surrounded by the city’s main government buildings. A little further, on the Henck Arronstraat, is St. Peter and Paul’s Cathedral, which is made entirely of wood. The church needs regular maintenance because the wood is quite fragile due to termites.

- Paramaribo was probably founded in 1631 by two Dutchmen as a trade mission.
- The trade mission was later taken over by the English, who built a fort: Fort Willoughby.
- When the area was conquered by a Dutch expedition from Zeeland, the fort was renamed Fort Zeelandia.
- The name Paramaribo is probably a corruption of ‘Parmirbo’, the name of an Indian village.
- The only university in Suriname is located in Paramaribo: the Anton de Kom University of Suriname.
