Holiday homes in Hellevoetsluis

A wonderful holiday or just a weekend getaway in the Netherlands: in Hellevoetsluis, you can enjoy a holiday in the Netherlands the whole year round. This charming town is located right on the Haringvliet, a large estuary of the North Sea in South Holland, between Voorne-Putten and the Hoeksche Waard. This makes Hellevoetsluis a popular destination for sailors and other water sports enthusiasts. There are no fewer than six marinas, and it can be pleasantly busy in July and August. Tourists from home and abroad come to ‘Hellevoet’ to enjoy themselves on and along the water. Sport fishing on the Haringvliet is also popular. At the ports and in the village, there are plenty of opportunities to book some nice fishing trips.

Exploring Hellevoetsluis

Hellevoetsluis has a rich history and was an important fortified city and naval port for a long time. The Jan Blanken Dry Dock, the defences and the Koningskade still remind us of that time. When you go for a short walk through the town, you will get a good impression of the main sights. The harbour, with the Oostkade, is probably the most photographed part. One eye-catcher is the imposing lighthouse at the entrance to the harbour. Another attraction is the De Hoop mill, a flour mill dating from 1801. From May to September, the mill is open to the public every Sunday afternoon. The city museum in Hellevoetsluis is also highly recommended. And with a wide choice of boutiques, restaurants and cafes, there are also plenty of options for shopping and going out.

Nice things to know about Hellevoetsluis

  • The Romans called it Haringvliet ‘Helius’. ‘Helvoet’ then meant something like ‘the foot of Helius’.
  • In the 14th century, a lock was constructed in the polder of Nieuw-Helvoet: the Hellevoetse lock. And so the current name of the town was born.
  • Hellevoetsluis was an important fortified city and war port for centuries. Famous admirals such as De Ruyter, Tromp and Piet Hein have had their home port there.
