Holiday homes in Viareggio
Viareggio is a popular seaside resort on the Mediterranean. The town is located in the west of
Italy, where the rolling hills of
Tuscany merge with the coastline of
Liguria. This part of the coast is called Versilia, and Viareggio is often referred to as "the pearl of Versilia". It’s no wonder, because when you rent a holiday home in Versilia you get to enjoy the best of both worlds: the pretty nature of Tuscany and all the ingredients of a wonderful beach holiday. Viareggio is also very popular with the Italians themselves. In summer, many city dwellers from Milan and Florence like to come here to enjoy the
sun, sea and beach. But Viareggio also attracts a lot of visitors in winter. It is especially busy in February and March for its elaborate carnival celebrations.
Exploring the area of Viareggio
Viareggio has a beautiful wide boulevard with plenty of shops, restaurants and bars. You can go for a stroll, do some
shopping, or have something to eat on one of the many nice terraces. Be sure to take a look at the lovely harbour where you can often see expensive yachts. A holiday home in Viareggio is also an ideal base for exploring the area. South of the city is a large nature reserve: ‘Parco di Migliarino, San Rossore, Massaciuccoli’, which consists of 23 kilometres of coastline, dunes and forests. Numerous routes have been set out for
walking and
cycling in the park. Almost all of them lead along the beautiful Lago di Massaciuccoli, a lake known for the large numbers of migratory birds that settle here. Mosquitoes also like to come here, so make sure you protect yourself!

- Viareggio and Venice have ‘competed’ for centuries for the title of "Carnival Capital" of Italy.
- Viareggio was founded around a castle built by the cities of Lucca and Genoa in 1172 as a defence against the city of Pisa. In the eighteenth century, the marshland around the Lago di Massaciuccoli was drained, which was the beginning of the current city.
- Next to Lago di Massaciuccoli is the town of Torre del Lago, where the famous composer Puccini was born and later wrote many of his operas. That is why the large Puccini Opera Festival is held at the lake every summer.
- Viareggio is the birthplace of several famous Italians, including the actress Nora Ricci and football coach Marcello Lippi.
