Here you can really experience the way of life and work on Curaçao. Go for a city walk and discover the numerous sights of Willemstad. For example, the famous pontoon bridge that connects the districts of Punda and Otrabanda. The colourful trading houses on the quay with traditional Dutch facades, the famous Fort Amsterdam, the nice shops in the Breedestraat - you will never get bored in Willemstad.

Willemstad: Dutch facades in the tropics

In Willemstad the Dutch influence can still be felt everywhere. In the street signs, the language and in the many museums, including the Postal Museum. This is close to the lively Floating Market, where fishermen from Venezuela and Columbia sell fish, vegetables and fruit. Willemstad is a lot more than a special chapter in Dutch colonial culture and history. There are plenty of opportunities to go shopping, to go out and to enjoy delicious food in one of the many restaurants. Willemstad is the perfect location to explore the rest of the island: Banda Ariba is located east of the city, if you head west you’ll drive through the Banda Abou district. Or you can visit one of many nice places in the area of Willemstad, like Emmastad or Salina.

Interesting things to know about Willemstad

  • In the olden days almost all the houses in Willemstad were bright white, but since they believed it was bad for the eyes, homeowners were forced to give some colour to their homes!
  • What does the name Curaçao mean? Nobody knows exactly. But the theory that it comes from "cura asado" - or "roasted priest" - highly unlikely ...
  • At Plasa Bieuw, the old market, you can eat delicious indigenous dishes, such as yambo (okra soup) or a kabtritu stobá (goat stew).
