Nazaré is located right in the middle of the Portuguese coastline on the Costa de Prata, more than 100 kilometres north of Lisbon. This former fishing village has grown into a popular seaside resort, with a lovely sickle-shaped beach that stands out beautifully against the azure blue ocean. Nazaré is known for ‘Praia Norte’, a world-famous stretch of the coast where there are metre-high waves. It’s no surprise that surfers from all over the world come to Nazaré to conquer these waves. Would you prefer a quiet swim and some sunbathing? No problem at all. A bit further down, you’ll find the child-friendly beach of São Martinho do Porto. Interesting facts about Nazaré

  • The high waves at Praia do Norte are caused by a geomorphological phenomenon called the ‘Ravine of Nazaré’, a huge opening in the continental plate, 170 kilometres long and 5 kilometres wide.
  • In October 2011, world-famous surfer Garrett McNamara surfed at Praia do Norte on what may have been the biggest wave ever.
  • The 318-metre-high rock at Nazaré is called ‘Sítio’. The view from the rock is breath-taking. There is also a small chapel, about which there is a mysterious legend about a knight and his horse.
