Holiday homes in Yogyakarta

Yogyakarta – or simply "Yogya" - is the cultural capital of Java. If you rent a holiday home in this vibrant city, you will definitely have a special holiday. There is something to see or do on every street corner and in every part of the city. When you walk through the lovely historic centre it’s like walking through time. Wherever you look, you’ll see ancient temples, mosques and other historic structures. One of the main landmarks is the famous sultan's palace, Kraton Ngayogyakarta Hadiningrat, with its stately forecourt, mosque and museum. Other attractions are the central post office, Kantor Pos Besar, the water castle and the Tugu monument. This obelisk from 1755 stands in the middle of a traffic junction and is often seen (and used) as the symbol of the city.

A vibrant city with a pleasant atmosphere

‘Yogya’ is not only rich in culture and history, it is also a charming student city with a vibrant nightlife. The relaxed and pleasant atmosphere makes the city popular with visitors of all ages. You will find lively markets, stalls, shops and authentic restaurants where you can enjoy delicious food everywhere. A pedicab - a ‘becak’ - is a great way to explore the city. Make sure to stop at Fort Vredenburg, an impressive fort that was built by the Dutch during colonisation. A holiday home in Yogyakarta is also a good base for discovering the rest of the island. You should definitely go on a daytrip to Borobudur, the world-famous Buddhist shrine. Prambanan is also a real ’must see‘. This is the largest Hindu temple complex in all of Indonesia.

Nice things to know about Yogyakarta:

  • Yogyakarta used to be part of the Javanese kingdom of Mataram and was called ‘Ngayogyakarta Hadiningrat’ at that time. This name is still used for the complex of the sultan's palace.
  • Tip for a sporting activity: play golf with a view of the active Merapi volcano.
  • Jalan Malioboro (Malioboro Street) is Yogyakarta's largest and most famous shopping street. This name is also used for the neighbourhood in which the street is located.
  • Local residents play chess every day at the sultan's palace. Feel free to join them for a game!
  • A local delicacy is sweet curry with jackfruit, palm sugar, coconut milk and chicken.
