Zell: culture, history and wine
Zell is best known for the ‘Zeller Schwarze Katz’ (Zeller Black Cat), the name of the local Mosel wine. A monument has even been erected for this on the central market square. The same square is surrounded by lovely medieval houses and a Romanesque tower from the 11th century. The old city wall with its round and square tower is also a reminder of the rich
culture and history of Zell. An interesting outing is a visit to the local wine museum. There you can clearly see how the wine industry has influenced this region for centuries. Another recommendation is a boat trip on the Mosel, which leads past fortresses and castles, steep vineyards and famous towns such as Koblenz and
Cochem.

Nice things to know about Zell:
- During the annual ‘Weinfest’, the traditional wine festival in the last week of June, the motto is: ‘Cheers to the Zeller Black cat’. A giant doll in the shape of a black cat is then driven through the village on a wagon.
- The name Black Cat refers to the local legend. When wine merchants from Aachen had to choose from three wine barrels, a black cat jumped on one of the barrels and started to hiss. Therefore, the merchants chose the barrel that the black cat was defending.
- In both 1848 and 1857 much of Zell was destroyed by a fire.
