A delightful holiday home in Gran Canaria

Gran Canaria is one of the seven inhabited Canary Islands which constitute one of the 17 autonomous regions of Spain. It’s also known as ‘the island of the everlasting Spanish spring’. It’s easy to see why: the climate is simply wonderful all the year around. Thanks to the pleasant temperatures, Gran Canaria is a superb destination for spending the winter. There are excellent shops and restaurants and many other convenient facilities. Outside the busiest summer months, there is also plenty to do on the island. One of the highlights is the scintillating carnival in February and March. At this time of year, there is good availability in Gran Canaria of well-equipped holiday rentals in lovely settings that are very well suited to long-term rental. Micazu is a firm believer in direct contact, so you book directly with the owner: quick, convenient and good value.

Enjoyment with a capital E

Gran Canaria is one of Europe’s most popular holiday destinations. This goes particularly for the south of the island which is always in demand because of its wide sandy beaches, pleasantly warm seawater and balmy temperatures. With so many beaches, there are lots of places to go swimming, sailing, wind surfing or practice other water sports. And if you venture inland, you’ll find more than enough to do in Gran Canaria. Reach the highest point of the island, Pico de las Nieves, and be rewarded with spectacular views of the whole of Gran Canaria. The markets in Puerto de Mogán and Arguineguin are well worth visiting too. Would you prefer to explore the island by (hire) car? You should absolutely make a stop in Artenara, where you’ll find many ancient cave dwellings that are still in use.

Fun facts about Gran Canaria

  • There used to be many dogs in the Canary Islands, of which Gran Canaria forms a part. This is the origin of the name: ‘Canariae Insulae’ is Latin for ‘the island of the dogs’.
  • Tourism is the largest source of income for Gran Canaria. This should come as no surprise: this island is no bigger than the Dutch province of Utrecht but attracts more than 3 million visitors every year.
  • Famous explorer Christopher Columbus once stopped over in Gran Canaria. The ‘Casa de Colón’ in Las Palmas is a reminder of his visit.
  • Gran Canaria’s neighbouring island is Tenerife, which also forms part of Spain.
