Interesting things to know about Rekem
- In 2008 Old-Rekem was officially named "The Most Beautiful Village of Flanders" by " Flanders Tourism ".
- Former Belgian football player and football coach Eric Gerets was born in Rekem (18 May 1954). The Dutch cyclists Karsten Kroon and Bram Tankink also have a house here.
- Typical regional products are Hasselt jenever, Kempen balkenbrij and Maasland ‘knapkoek’.
- Rekem was first mentioned in 1140 as Radekeim, and in 1143 as Radenchen. Presumably, it is a contraction of the Germanic personal name Rado and ing or heim (place of residence).
