Fun facts about Gran Canaria
- There used to be many dogs in the Canary Islands, of which Gran Canaria forms a part. This is the origin of the name: ‘Canariae Insulae’ is Latin for ‘the island of the dogs’.
- Tourism is the largest source of income for Gran Canaria. This should come as no surprise: this island is no bigger than the Dutch province of Utrecht but attracts more than 3 million visitors every year.
- Famous explorer Christopher Columbus once stopped over in Gran Canaria. The ‘Casa de Colón’ in Las Palmas is a reminder of his visit.
- Gran Canaria’s neighbouring island is Tenerife, which also forms part of Spain.
