Murau is a fantastic destination for a varied holiday in beautiful Styria. The historic town lies in the valley of the River Mur, which winds its way from Austria through Slovenia, Croatia and Hungary. From November to February, the beautiful Mur Valley turns into a winter wonderland. Murau itself is not a real winter sports resort (that is Sankt Lorenzen ob Murau, a little further down the road), but the Kreischberg winter sports area is practically around the corner. Murau is also an excellent base for exploring the slopes in this area. But Murau is also an excellent holiday destination outside the winter sports season. In spring, everything is in bloom, and in summer you can also go for lovely walks and bike rides. So, get out and about and discover the most beautiful spots in Styria.

There are numerous fun attractions for the kids, and with a playground and swimming pool nearby there is always something to do. A ride on the "Mur Valley Railway", an old-fashioned steam train, is also fun. And if you like playing golf, there are two golf courses in the area. Nice things to know about Murau

  • Murau is one of the most important centres of the timber industry in Europe. The St. Ruprecht ob Murau Wood Museum is entirely devoted to wood.
  • Murau was home to the 2015 Snowboarding and Freestyle Skiing World Championships in Kreischberg.
  • Murau originated around the year 1000 as a Roman settlement called "Altenmarkt". The "Murowe" estate, from which the current name originates, was established in the 13th century.
  • Murau has a rich beer tradition. Beer was first brewed here in 1495.
