Holiday homes in Wemeldinge

Wemeldinge is a picturesque village in Zeeland on the north side of Zuid-Beveland. The village is located right on the Eastern Scheldt inlet and the canal through Zuid-Beveland. Wemeldinge is the oldest village on the peninsula. A walk through the old village centre gives a good impression of Wemeldinge's rich history. The nostalgic water-level houses and the lock bridges are a reminder of the time when this was a thriving centre for inland shipping. Another eye-catcher is the beautiful Dorpsstraat planted with lime trees, which has even been designated as a protected village sight. With numerous boutiques, small supermarkets and department stores, there are also plenty of options for shopping. There are excellent dining facilities in the village and at the ports, so you’ll never have to go hungry.

Exploring the surrounding area of Wemeldinge

A holiday home in Wemeldinge is an excellent choice for a holiday or weekend getaway in the Netherlands. Many walking and cycling routes have been set out directly from the village. These will lead you past the most beautiful spots in the region. You can easily reach the quiet beach of Wemeldinge from your holiday home. It’s not big, but it’s beautifully situated behind the promenade, near the marina. You can also make many other nice trips in the area. You should certainly visit Neeltje Jans. The former work island at the Eastern Scheldt Storm Surge Barrier is world famous and attracts tourists from all over the world every year. The Eastern Scheldt itself is one of the most famous locations for diving in the Netherlands. If you have little experience, there are also beautiful and safe places to snorkel.

Nice things to know about Wemeldinge

  • In Zeeland there are many place names ending in -inge. The first part usually refers to a person's name. In Wemeldinge this is probably the Germanic name Wimald, an abbreviation of Werimbald.
  • The residents of Wemeldinge used to live mainly off of fish and oyster catches. Many street and other names still remind of that time (such as the Oesterbaai – Oyster Bay holiday park).
  • Wemeldinge has two beautiful old flour mills, which are still in operation: the ‘Aeolus’ from 1869 and ‘De Hoop’ from 1866.
  • One of the most famous Dutch poets, Jan G. Elburg, was born in Wemeldinge. He was part of a group of notable people in the Fifties, such as Lucebert, Hugo Claus and Gerrit Kouwenaar.
