There are numerous villages located around the Frisian Lakes in Friesland that have managed to preserve their charm for centuries. Sint Nicolaasga is such a place, an authentic village near the Tjeukemeer lake. Sint Nicolaasga actually has two faces. On one hand, this village is rich in cultural-historical sights, with the beautiful St. Nicholas Church from 1887 as the main attraction. The Roman Catholic Church is dedicated to Holy Bishop Nicholas of Myra, to whom the current Sinterklaas feast in the Netherlands is often attributed. On the other hand, Sint Nicolaasga is a fantastic destination for a water sports or sailing holiday in Friesland. Interesting facts about Sint Nicolaasga
- At the Saint Nicholas Church you will find the ‘Lourdes Cave of Sint Nicolaasga’, a replica of the real cave in the famous pilgrimage site of Lourdes in the French Pyrenees.
- The Frisian name for Sint Nicolaasga is: ‘Sint Nyk’.
- Every year from the first Thursday of September the ‘Sint Nykster merke’, a big party with traditional parades and performances which lasts three days, is held here.
