Holiday homes in Vledder

Vledder is an authentic village in the southwest of the province of Drenthe. Vledder is also known as the ‘art village’ due to its special museums and galleries. One of the most striking museums is ‘De Museums Vledder’. The plural "museums" refers to the different departments, each of which can be considered as a separate museum. One of these is the "Fake Art" department, which only displays works of art from master forgers. The historic Miramar Sea Museum is also worth a visit, as are the special colonial houses and the maze of the 'Maatschappij van Weldadigheid' (Society of Violence). Vledder really is an ideal destination for art lovers. But there is much more to see and do in and around the village!

Exploring the surroundings of Vledder

A short walk through Vledder will immediately give you a good impression of the village, with the lovely St. John the Baptist Church from the 15th century as the main attraction. Just like the churches in Norg and Anloo, this church has a special saddle roof tower. Another recommendation is the Molen van Vledder, a small flour mill from 1968. The village also has a few boutiques, supermarkets and other shopping opportunities. But visitors mainly come to Vledder to enjoy the stunning landscape of Drenthe. All around the area you will find lovely routes for walking and cycling. These will lead you past the most beautiful spots, including the beautiful Drents-Friese Wold National Park. This is one of the largest nature reserves in the Netherlands and is even one of the most important in Europe. The whole area also has a nice network of bridleways, with well-marked routes for horse riding.

Things to know about Vledder

  • Vledder is a typical example of a ‘brinkdorp’ or ‘esdorp’. These villages originated in the early Middle Ages as a public gathering place for cattle (a brink) or a communal field (an es).
  • The name Vledder refers to a wet place. The two oldest streets of the village therefore sit along a lower spot that used to be quite wet.
  • The Molen van Vledder was partly built with parts of demolished windmills from the Groningen villages of Kantens and Vierverlaten.
  • Vledder’s football club is called BEW (blue and white) and was established in 1951.
