- The Torreón de la Cala is a reminder of the Arab rule of La Cala de Mijas. The tower was built in 1540, and today, the tower houses the Study Centre of the watchtowers and the tourist office of La Cala.
- ‘Cala’ means something like creek or inlet, so La Cala de Mijas was thus founded at a creek or inlet of Mijas.
