These are located in the valley of the river Serchio, which has been flowing through the hills past the towns of Lucca, Bagni di Lucca and Barga for centuries. Nice things to know about Bagni di Lucca:

  • The thermal waters of Bagni di Lucca come from two natural springs, the Grotta Grande and the Grotta Paolina. The latter is named after a sister of Emperor Napoleon, who often visited here.
  • Another sister of Napoleon, Elisa Bacocchio, also often visited Bagni di Lucca. At that time she was Duchess of Lucca and had the road built into the town.
  • Bagni di Lucca means something like ‘the baths of Lucca’, a reference to the thermal baths.
  • Italy has more places that are called Bagni, such as Bagni in Umbria (municipality of Nocera Umbra) and Bagni di Contursi in Campania (municipality of Contursi Terme).
