Holiday homes in Montignac

Montignac is a picturesque town on the banks of the river Vézère. The town is world famous for the Lascaux cave, one of the most beautiful sights in the Dordogne for its special prehistoric murals. Montignac is considered one of the most beautiful villages in the region. A walk through the small medieval streets leads past beautiful churches, historic buildings and nice shops. In the middle of the old centre is a beautiful old stone bridge over the Vézère. There you have a nice view of another highlight of Montignac; typical stilt houses with wooden galleries along the banks of the river.

Nice things to know about Montignac:

  • The Lascaux cave was discovered on September 8, 1940 by Marcel Ravidat, who did not have to work that day in the Montignac garage. He and three friends had become curious about a hole in the ground exposed by a fallen pine tree.
  • There is also a Montignac in the municipality of Gironde and in the Haute-Pyrénées.
  • The river Vézère rises in the Massif Central on the plateau de Millevaches and ends at the village Limeuil of in the Dordogne.
  • A local specialty is "lamprey à la bordelaise" (jawless fish): a fish caught off of Gironde.
