Interesting things to know about Balashi

  • Balashi is also the name of a famous beer brand, which is brewed in Oranjestad. It was Aruba’s very first beer and is also exported to Curaçao and Bonaire.
  • A local delicacy that may take some getting used to, is ‘sópi di mondongo’: soup made from the stomachs and hooves of a cow or goat.
  • North of Balashi is a beautiful nature reserve: The Frenchman’s Pass. Tradition has it that a fierce battle raged here at the beginning of the 17th century between French invaders and the indigenous people. The story has taken on such mythical proportions that some islanders don’t dare to come here.
