Terraced House

Casa Solarida: aantrekkelijk geprijsd

Here you experience the couleur locale: peace and cosiness of a residential area with everything you need within walking distance.

The nearby Tweede Rijweg and the Kwattaweg are 2 important main roads that lead you directly to the center, entertainment area and many sights of Paramaribo.
The city center at 5 km can be reached by public transport or taxi within fifteen minutes. In the area you will find everything: bank, ATM, money exchange office, Chinese shops and warung. Via the 2e Rijweg you will reach the famous Hermitage shopping mall and Choi's supermarket where many imported Dutch foodstuffs are for sale. From your holiday home you drive a few kilometers further on the Kwattaweg, where a market is held on Sundays, Wednesdays and Fridays, the 3rd Rijweg market.

The Kwattaweg is part of the east-west connection. The Kwattaweg turns into Garnizoenspad and ends at the bridge over the Saramacca River. Over the bridge you arrive in Groningen, capital of the Saramacca district.

The comfortably furnished holiday home is an excellent base for your day trips and short excursions.
We live downstairs and Esseline (known in the area as aunt Es) likes to spend her free time in the garden, where tropical plants can be found. Under the house is a terrace with a terrace set where you can sit in the shade or relax in the hammocks that we have made available. You can also hang the laundry and possibly. children can play safely.
Smoking is not allowed in the house, but outside where an ashtray will be provided if requested!

The tap water in Paramaribo is of drinking water quality (also tastes good). The holiday home is equipped with one large water tank, a water filter and hydrophore (water pump), so that people are not inconvenienced by the often low water pressure and any interruptions in the water supply.

The garden and the house are well maintained and an anti-insect treatment is regularly done.

From the balcony you can watch the activities in the street until the wee hours. That is an attraction in itself, neighbors have a chat with each other or visit each other. The ice cream man also comes by regularly.

Do you want to stay informed about local and international news?
There are several local radio stations, of which Radio Apintie, ABC and Radio 10 are the best known. The (FM stereo) program offering is reasonably varied and is largely provided in Dutch. Some radio stations broadcast the Dutch news broadcasts of Radio Nederland Wereldomroep, as well as the Dutch Top-50. The Dutch Worldwide Broadcasting Company can also be received very well on short wave in Suriname.

Several Dutch-language television stations can be received via the antenna on the house, of which ABC, Apintie, ATV and STVS are the most important. In addition, there are a number of channels that focus on a Hindustani, Javanese or Chinese audience. The predominantly American feature films and television series are not subtitled or dubbed. There are many programs of a religious nature, talk shows and football.

In addition, part of the program offer of BVN-TV (Dutch TV on the satellite) is beamed through. For example, the NOS news, NOVA and Studio Sport are broadcast daily. In addition, news blocks from CNN and BBC will be taken over.

Additional information

The house is an authentic high seating blocks home and although one of the oldest houses in the street in neat condition and well maintained. The upper portion is made of wood. In 2003 we have grown, so we 'moved' his to the ground floor. We are also owners of the adjoining plot which plays in the backdrop of street.

Of our guests, we hear that the house has a cozy and intimate atmosphere. This is a cozy neighborhood, lively but not too busy. The neighbors are friendly and social, not pushy but if you feel the need, they are always in for a chat. They unnoticed eye that feels very nice. Feel free to chat with them, they like that. Everybody speaks Dutch.

Marius lived there from his childhood and knows all oudbewoners the street. The children were born and raised and are now out of the house. One son after they all live in the Netherlands. For that reason we went regularly to the Netherlands before, but in recent years there has been a reverse movement journey. The neighborhood is a mixture of various races and cultures. The people in this neighborhood have respect for each other and there is friendship among themselves. Fortunately, we have no problems with crime. Social control is great. From the secure balcony facing the street is very nice to see and experience.

Approximately 3-5 min walk to the main road (Kwattaweg). At the corner of the street is a branch of a department store (CHM) and a carwash. The Kwattaweg find various (Chinese) shops, Warung, butchers Rossignol, the famous accupunturist Rubing, but also drugstore, pharmacy, gas station, taxi, minibuses that direction city center / central market of Paramaribo drive. On Wednesday, Friday and Sunday is the third known Roadway market where you definitely should take a look. Apart from vegetables, fruits, herbs, cds, cheap new plants and stuff, can you also tasty and cheap snacks Javanese (Saoto soup, lontong tofu, fried rice and noodles) buy.
Food pick up is easy and cheap.
If you down the street, you have the choice between a warung (Javanese food) and a chinese takeaway. There are several shops within walking distance where you can buy everything.

Also a money exchange (cambio) and internet shop are nearby.

For those who still want more, there is the Hermitage Mall, a shopping mall where the relatively more expensive items are located with very long opening hours and Ma Retreat Mall, a shopping mall where relatively cheaper (often Chinese made) goods are sold. There is also a delicatessen located in the mall Maretraite.

Choi's is the supermarket with a wide variety of imported foods and more expensive than other supermarkets. Best Mart also has a pretty wide range and is less expensive. On every street corner there is a (Chinese) supermarket where the range is often less extensive but much of the food for sale.

The butchers have a large assortment of meat and meat of good quality. The most famous shops include: Rossignol, Stolk (both the Kwattaweg) and Keurslager the Steenbakkerijstraat.

There are also markets, the best known are: the central market (daily except Sunday) and 3e Roadway market (Wednesday, Friday and Sunday) market where you can for example (leafy) vegetables and fruit. Here you can buy very cheap Javanese food.

The local beer, Parbo, is of excellent quality. Whisky (or Johnnie Walker Black Label) is very popular. Rum, as mix with cola, also very popular, locally rum (Borgoe ") of good quality produce, which is relatively inexpensive and more popular than Bacardi. The drinks in the supermarkets for sale King's also has an extensive range.

Restaurants and Bars
There are a number of restaurants offering international cuisine. The best known are: Sensi, Spice Quest, Doc 204 and De Waag. There are reputable restaurants with a special kitchen: Chi Min (Chinese), Garden of Eden (Thai's), Lee's (Korean), Sarinah (Indian), Log House (Afrikaans) and the Optimist eatery. There are many warungs (Mir'oso Pawiro and in the famous district Blauwgrond) and smaller restaurants that can be eaten without any problems.

For faster bite, there are the roti shops: Roopram and Joosje. There is also a Pizza Hut, MacDonald's, Burger King, KFC and Popeyes.

Clothing and footwear
Normal summer clothing complies excellently, preferably cotton or linen because synthetic materials do not have enough ventilation. This is mainly a matter of taste and feeling.

The warm climate disguise it more often than in cooler regions.

Connect with Surinamese is relatively easy because everyone speaks Dutch. In general politeness valued in Suriname. There is no quick getutoyeerd, the elderly, but not peers.

Broadly the same rules of courtesy apply here just as in the Netherlands.
You will notice that a great warmth and love for the Netherlands lies in almost all Surinamese hearts. Anything is possible, as long as you show interest for the host country. Surinamese are justifiably proud of their country. One of the most frequently asked questions to foreigners is "What do you think of our country?"

Surinamese calls will not soon intimate questions; certain subjects, such as marriage, relationship, salary or health are found among the private sphere where one can not talk about it.

Sometimes the pedantry that many Dutch people simply peculiar, inappropriate and experienced as annoying. Nothing is understandably a Surinamese as annoying as a Dutchman who have just come to tell what happened in Suriname has gone wrong and how things in the future to walk. That superior attitude, conscious or not adopted, is not appreciated, though not everyone let on. As so often in life is the basis for all calls: the respect of partners for each other.

A Surinamese loves his family. Family life is to him above all. But there are Surinamese generally very hospitable towards others. You will - especially if you have to know people better - will regularly be invited. "Come along" is really intended as an open invitation. In the Netherlands we are accustomed to always make an appointment. Find that many Surinamese unnecessary. Nobody will be surprised if you suddenly unannounced on the doorstep.

The dishes can be quite sharp (the cook or chef has "put pepper!"). Meat is usually not de-boned (especially not poultry) which means you'll be constantly on the bones and other inedible parts removed.

Most houses have no bell to ring the bell and might cause your arrival otherwise clear. If there are dogs in the yard, which will normally the job of messenger and take on their bosses of your arrival to notify. Wait until you've gotten the clear signal of the lord or lady of the house! In other cases, call: "Knock, knock". Umbrellas should never be opened indoors, that's bad luck.

In the Netherlands, Suriname and the clock-time.

A frequently heard Surinamese advice is "no spang", do not worry. An opinion which is associated with the slower pace of life than in the Netherlands. For novices in Paramaribo, which arise from time to time excited about (alleged) indifference and disinterest in the people they meet, this advice is therefore very important.
Taking precautions is important because in the tropics minor disorders can lead to inflammation faster. It is important that you are aware and remain alert and responsive to problems.

o Throughout the coastline are mosquitoes, especially at sunset (between 5 and 7) they are active.

o In the interior is a malaria risk (not yet in the city). It is therefore very important that before you begin a malaria cure if you want to go into the interior. If after a visit to the interior symptoms such as headache, fever, chills and / or diarrhea, think that it is never the flu will be. Only if it is possible that you have dengue or malaria, you can suffice with the home pharmacy. In any other case, consult the BOG.

o There is no entry in Suriname ensured. Recommended are vaccinations against diphtheria, typhoid, polio (DTP), tetanus, yellow fever and hepatitis. Some vaccination programs
(Eg, typhoid / DTP / DTP) take 4 to 6 weeks.

o Pharmacy / Medication: you can consider to take. Anti-mosquito (Autan, DEET) and anti-itch remedies (anti-hystaminen, tea tree oil), and anti-sunscreen (factor 25), cap or hat.

That does not mean you can be stabbed during the day.

Suriname has many exotic species of insects. This is good for nature and nice when you want to study, but otherwise they are not sweeties for people.

Cockroaches and flies
belong to the tropics: they're lurking everywhere. In a clean house sit them but you have less problems. Do not leave food or food scraps lying around because they come off piling on. They are active during the day.
Especially at night cockroaches are most active. Keep windows and doors closed when the light is because they come to the light. You see one, grab the broom, the newspaper or buy as soon as possible to the spray to tackle. Over the same rate.

Salamanders / Kamrawentje
These are small salamanders that house especially at night hunting for insects. They are useful because they eat flies, mosquitoes, beetles, etc. in house. Do not leave food or drinks on the counter because they are crazy.

Ants
These live in cracks and climb all along. You mess with sugar than they are within a short time in order to your mouth. Make like the dirty place clean and spacious with empty glasses soft drinks and sweets quickly, they will be so again.

Always clean the house because that is the best remedy against vermin.
