Welcome to this beautiful walled port city with a well-preserved fortress, where the authoritarian governor Salazar, among others, held his political prisoners. It now houses the Liberation Museum, a must for those interested in the recent history of the country. With the lace museum, the city has a second museum that is worth a visit. Peniche is of course best known as the European capital of wave surfing, with its many surf spots with phenomenal waves. The World Cup surfing is always held here in October. The city is located on a peninsula with a beautiful lighthouse on Cape Cabo Carvoeiro. You can of course also visit it, every Wednesday between 2 pm and 5 pm (summer) / between 1.30 pm and 4.30 pm (winter). The entire peninsula is currently in the running to become a UNESCO Intangible Heritage. As you drive down the Marginal Norte and Marginal Sul, you'll understand why: the ocean has eroded the cliffs here in a stunningly beautiful way. With Carreiro de Sao Marcos you can also visit one of the most beautiful bays in the world here, at least according to Lonely Planet. The colorful houses seem to be glued to the edge of the cliff. Boats depart daily from the harbor to the island group Islas das Berlengas. In the harbor is a beautiful shipyard. Above all, Peniche is of course a beautiful fishing town, with many small-scale fishing companies: from canning companies, over fish processing factories to freezing factories: you will find it all here!
