Zonnemaire is an authentic village in the Schouwen-Duivenland area of Zeeland. The town is located right in the Grevelingen recreation area, with the Grevelingen Lake as the main attraction. Nice things to know about Zonnemaire

  • Zonnemaire is named after Sonnemare or Sunnonmeri, the water between the islands of Bommenede and Schouwen. Sonne means both ‘water’ and ‘south’ or sunward, where the sun is at noon. ‘Mare’ means water.
  • Zonnemaire is called ‘Sunnemere’ in the local dialect.
  • There is a bust of Pieter Zeeman (1865-1943) in the village - a scientist from Zonnemaire who won the Nobel Prize for physics in 1902.
  • ‘Carbidschieten’ – setting off an improvised cannon made from a milk can - is a popular tradition among the youth of Zonnemaire on New Year's Eve.
