Nice things to know about Loosdrecht
- The first data on Loosdrecht date from 1298. At that time it was a swamp area, located between the river Vecht and the Utrechtse Heuvelrug.
- The Loosdrechtse Plassen lakes were created in the 16th century by peat extraction from peat areas. This happened on such a large scale that large water plains were created.
- After this ‘dark period’ the municipality became impoverished. A local pastor set up a porcelain factory to help the residents find work. The famous (and now rare) Loosdrecht porcelain was produced in this factory.
- If there is enough ice, the Ronde van Loosdrecht skating race is organised here in winter; one of fourteen classic natural ice races that are skated in the Netherlands.
