MaisonMaxine is located in the historic heart of Nieuwpoort. The newly constructed cycling and walking promenade along the Kaai and the harbor channel forms the ideal connection between the city and the coast. The house is the ideal base to discover the numerous tourist attractions of Nieuwpoort and the surrounding area. Visit the WWI heritage in the Westhoek (Veurne-Ypres-Diksmuide). A little further you will find the cities of Bruges (43 km) and Ostend (18 km). The house contains a folder with a lot of practical information about the region and detailed cycling and walking routes. Culture and city Take a historic city walk along the lively market square with the town hall in Flemish Renaissance style and the imposing Markthalle. Next to it you will find the Belfry, which is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Also pay a visit to the famous Albert I monument. Under this imposing memorial you will find the “West Front” visitor center where you can learn everything about the flooding during the First World War. Rather fancy a day of shopping? For this you can go to the pleasant shopping street with numerous boutiques, chain stores and delicatessens, also open on Sundays. Culinary indulgence Get the Nieuwpoort regional products, daily fresh North Sea fish and shrimps, in one of the numerous fish shops on the Kaai and cook together in the open kitchen. For those who prefer to put their feet under the table, Nieuwpoort has many tasty addresses for both a quick bite and an extensive gastronomic dinner. Nature and beach With the free ferry service you reach the nature reserve "De Ijzermonding". The fresh water of the Yser mixes with the salty sea water, a unique biotope for plants and animals. With a bit of luck you can spot seals here. Tip: Every Wednesday (during the Easter and summer holidays) you can explore the reserve with a nature guide. Enjoy the greenery in the De Koolhofput nature reserve or take a guided walk through the dunes. Just outside Nieuwpoort you can climb the high Blekker, the highest dune of the entire coastal strip. Get a breath of fresh air and leave the daily hustle and bustle behind for a while! Recreation & children Nieuwpoort is a paradise for children. Besides building sandcastles on the beach, romping in the sea or cruising with a go-cart on the dike, the city has much more in store. If the sea is a bit too cold, you can visit the municipal swimming pool with water playground (in the Leopold II park) or a little further on in Sunparks Oostduinkerke. Visit the De Lenspolder petting zoo. You also have various water sports facilities, mini golf, tennis courts, a riding stable, etc. The amusement parks Plopsaland and Plopsaqua are 18 km from the house, Bellewaerde (with new aqua park) is located at 42 km.
