Hello, I'm Ana and I love meeting people of other nationalities. I speak Portuguese, French, Italian and English. I designed the layout of the house, with families with children in mind, because I know that is not easy to travel with them. I created a room just with toys so that parents don't have to add them to their small travel luggage. Be welcome

Farol Island: The Complete Guide to Ilha do Farol, Portugal

Ilha do Farol is a small community on a barrier island on the edge of the Ria Formosa, around 10km from Faro and 6km from Olhão. Praia do Farol, or Ilha do Farol as it’s known locally, is actually located on Ilha da Culatra. Although the names suggest they are separate islands, they are two different parts of the same 6km long island. With extensive white sandy beaches, crystal clear waters, and an incredible desert island feel it’s a fantastic day trip.

How to get to Ilha do Farol?

As it’s an island access is by boat only. The main and most frequent connections are from Olhão and from Faro. Small ferries operate the route every couple of hours on most days. Alternatively, you can hire a water taxi from either Olhão or Faro too. You can buy the tickets for the ferries at small offices at the dock in Olhão, or at Portas do Mar in Faro. Tickets cost around €1.85 each way. There are two piers on Ilha da Culatra, one in the east called Farol, and one halfway down the island in Culatra. The distance between the two docks is around 3.5km and you can walk between them if you wish. If you’re arriving by one of the ferries, you need to make sure to check for the last sailing of the day. It can be an expensive mistake to miss it. The water taxis are available but charge around €25-30 for the trip back to the mainland. Compared to the €1.85 ferry ticket it’s a little pricey.

What to see and do on Ilha do Farol?

The island is mostly known for its exceptional beaches, incredible water and deserted experience. As soon as you step out of the small community of Farol, you’ll experience it. It’s a supremely relaxing place to spend the day on and is an incredible break from much of the usual Algarve. However, that doesn’t mean you should skip through the small village and head straight to the beach at Praia da Ilha do Farol. In the village of Farol you’ll find delightful houses, wonderful gardens and a few small coffee shops, all under the setting of the stunning lighthouse!

Olhão, an arabe city in the Algarve. Nestled in the heart of the Algarve, is a town that beautifully captures the essence of the region’s maritime heritage. Dominated by its bustling fish market, which is best visited on Saturdays, the town is a testament to the Algarve’s deep-rooted fishing traditions. Every day, local fishermen bring in a fresh catch that ranges from sardines to octopus, making the market a vibrant hub of activity and a haven for seafood enthusiasts.
Silves is the historic capital of the Algarve and retains much of its grand history. It has one of the best examples of a 13th century castle and its town has many of its historic features from its long past. This history and culture is balanced with the usual features of Portuguese life, a lively market, café culture and booming restaurant scene resulting in some of the best food you can find in the Algarve. If you’re nearby it’s well worth a visit, or perhaps even worth basing yourself in Silves to visit the rest of the Algarve from. Alternatively, it makes a great stopping point when crossing the Algarve!
Protruding 2.5km south of Lagos, Ponta da Piedade is a dramatic wedge of headland with contorted, polychrome sandstone cliffs and towers, complete with a lighthouse and, in spring, hundreds of nesting egrets, with crystal-clear turquoise water below. The surrounding area blazes with wild orchids in spring. On a clear day you can see east to Carvoeiro and west to Sagres. The only way to reach it is by car or on foot.
Lagos is one of the most visited cities in the Algarve and Portugal, due to its variety of tourist-friendly beaches, rock formations (Ponta da Piedade), bars, restaurants and hotels, renowned for its vibrant summer nightlife and parties. Yet, Lagos is also a historic centre of the Portuguese Age of Discovery, frequent home of Henry the Navigator, historical shipyard and, at one time, centre of the European slave trade.
The pleasure of visiting Tavira is not only to find irresistible rich history in one of the most beautiful villages in Algarve. Seeing Tavira is also an occasion to dive on some of the most beautiful beaches in the country and feel Ria Formosa’s soul and energy all around you.

Tavira was built alongside River Gilão, in an intricate of narrow roadways and white houses that you feel like walking without haste. Jardim do Coreto is near the city center and the liveliest area, where numerous people walk around at night enjoying ice cream and the fresh air, especially on summer nights, when shows or other events bring truly more life to this area.

In this city center, you can also find Ribeira Market, which after having been stopped from use for its original functions, was restored and is now a venue for entertainment and leisure. And from there to the castle where you have the most amazing view over the village, Tavira’s allure tempts us to discover its corners and reveal its secrets.

The juicy fruit orchards, don’t lack the gold of oranges. Furthermore, the whitewashed houses, the lacy chimneys, the hills covered with fig and almond trees, and, in the end, the vast mountain where eagles fly, birds sing, and flowers bloom. The castle and the many church steeples.

The river reflects the houses and gardens as a mirror. The triangles of the “scissors” roofs. Beach and sea horizons. This is a quick sketch of Tavira’s charms and its municipality. Tavira is definitely a city of art and history and a must-visit point on the Algarve’s cultural itinerary. An invitation to discovery voyages.

There is a certain Arabic charm in this city, in its “scissors” or hipped roofs, which cut out from the sky in a peculiar way, and in the lattice doors made of interwoven wood that protect the houses, letting in air and sound, the heritage of the Arabs who inhabited this region.
Tavira is distributed along the two banks of the river, in an intricate of narrow streets and white houses that you feel like walking without haste. Jardim do Coreto is near the city center and the liveliest area, where many people walk around at night enjoying ice cream and the fresh air, especially on summer nights, when shows or other events bring even more life to this area. This is where the Ribeira Market is located, which, after abandoning its original functions, is now a space for entertainment and leisure.
One of the best beaches in Algarve and still in the wild. The way to go is with local small boats from the place called Fábrica. In busy times of the year it's quite hard to park. If the tide is low you can just go walking with your feet in the water.
