Mandello del Lario (10,000 inhabitants) is a village with many cultural activities in the summer. It has a freely accessible beach with a bar, restaurant, sun loungers, parasols and shaded areas under the trees. The location is strategic: only 1 hour drive from Milan, Bergamo and Como and 10 minutes from Lecco. Idyllic lakeside villages are within easy reach by boat, bike or train (Bellagio, Varenna, Bellano, Menaggio). Hiking enthusiasts can indulge themselves in the mountains (the Grigne massif) or follow the medieval merchant path " Via del Viandante" along the lake with breathtaking views.
The train station, shopping center, supermarket and bakery are within walking distance as well as the lake + 4 parking spaces. The house is vertically divided over 3 floors and fully equipped (dishwasher, washing machine, air conditioning, telephone, WiFi, TV, DVD player and 2 ladies' bicycles). Due to the narrow and steep stairs, the house is not suitable for children who cannot climb stairs or people who have difficulty walking.

Buongiorno! Let me introduce myself: my name is Anette de Boer and I have been living in Italy (Monza) since 1987. As a dietitian in a country where the food is (too) tasty, you will understand that I have a hard time here. The rustic building in Mandello, with foundations from 1660, is a perfect place to enjoy the good Italian life in the midst of the local population. Location & area recommendations

Additional information

From the house you can easily walk up into the mountains, where several hiking trails start. The description of the routes and maps are available in the apartment. You can also take the train to Varenna, for example, and walk from there to Bellano. Then you walk on the so-called "Via del Viandante" (merchants' path) that connects Lecco with Colico. The path is easily accessible and signposted. You have beautiful views over the lake and walk through various hamlets through forests to the next train station and from there travel back to Mandello del Lario.

Here you can sunbathe in the summer and well into the autumn or enjoy the shade under the trees. There are beach chairs and umbrellas for rent or you can lie down freely on the lawn. The restaurant serves pizzas, pasta and aperitifs and the bar has a terrace for coffee and beer lovers.

Want to stay on the water? Everything is possible: from a private motorboat, to be arranged through the neighbor (he sails), to a boat trip with the regular sailing services from Mandello del Lario or renting a canoe at the Lido. Taking the boat to Belaggio and Varenna is of course a must. A terrace there and a visit to the botanical gardens of beautiful villas (Villa Monastero in Varenna or Villa Melzi in Bellagio) is definitely worth it.

There is no doubt that you can eat well in Italy. But where is that in Mandello and surroundings within walking or cycling distance of the house? For a good pizza I recommend Restaurant Grigna, on the main road near the train station. In the summer it is wonderful to sit outside, under an ancient chestnut tree. A highly appreciated phenomenon are the lunch menus for a mere penny (11-14 €), which is all-encompassing and is also called menu lavoro (work menu). An Italian eats warm twice a day, so whoever works (but also the tourist) eats a primo, secondo, contorno, acqua, vino and caffè (a caffè is an espresso coffee) every day. The best menu is at Galli e Gufi; but also Riva Granda, Al Ghezz and Al Giardinetto in the old center on the lake. It only remains for me to wish you 'Buon appetito' and a relaxed enjoyment.

A city trip to Milan is within an hour by train. In addition to the shopping streets Via Vittorio Emanuele, Corso Italia and Via Dante in the center, there are 4 interesting art museums in this same area: the Museo Novecento and Palazzo Reale on the Duomo Square and a little further on Castello Sforzesco and the Pinacoteca di Brera. Next to the Pinacotace di Brera is a breathtakingly beautiful botanical garden where you can relax, enjoying the lush greenery around you.

2 routes: Mandello del Lario - Abbadia Lariana 10 min. without tunnels Nice wide beach and a good restaurant in the park. Mandello del Lario - Lierna - Baia Riva Bianca 30 min. with 2 tunnels: bring reflective vests and arm/ankle reflectors Riva Bianca is the most beautiful bay of Lake Como.
