Additional information

Manderscheid is a spa with more than 8 thousand inhabitants and is situated on the river Lieser. In Manderscheid are available from the year 1173, the Upper Castle and the Niederburg these two castles represent the history of the area, which was dominated by two blocs. The Obernburg belonged to the Electorate of Trier, the Niederburg and most surrounding communities depended on Luxembourg and was thus the most easterly point of the Southern Netherlands. By Manderscheid the famous Lieserpath, runs the walkway along the Lieser with distant views, canyons, Meers and forest. Also in Manderscheid But the museum. Manderscheid is approximately 1 hour and 40 minutes from Maastricht and 3 hours and 30 minutes from Utrecht.

History:

The first mention of Manderscheid was in 973 in a donation document of Otto II to the Archbishop and Elector of Trier. Since the mid-12th century Manderscheid belonged to the Archbishopric of Trier. Balduin Elector of Trier granted the town city rights in 1332. It was the capital of an office of Electoral Trier. The wine cellar of Electors is now the town hall. Citizens living of making cloth, which did not lead to great wealth here. In 1718, almost the entire town destroyed by fire when the inhabitants were just on pilgrimage. In 1794 the town was sacked by the French troops.

In Manderscheid are two ruins. This seems a strange thing, two castles at such a short distance from each other, but for those who know the background is a logical thing. Between the two castles namely flows the river Lieser, which then forms the border between the area of ??the Electors of Trier and the area of ??Luxembourg. The Obernburg is a flattened rock. She was surrounded by a wall and had a triangular donjon with five floors. The keep is now freely accessible from above and has a beautiful view of the Niederburg and the Manderscheid.

The Obernburg was in an area that the Carolingians to the monastery of Echternach had donated and where they had been appointed because they could carry. No war itself on Niederburg guardians However, this quickly led to problems when the guardians are proclaimed to men of Manderscheid and walked to Luxembourg. They wanted the Obernburg, who belonged to the diocese of Trier at the time, did not recognize. The Obernburg is for the first time in a battle between Count Henry the Blind of Namur-Luxembourg and Archbishop Albero of Trier which was conducted between 1141 and 1146. The village of Ober Manderscheid was an office of Electoral Trier. The area of ??the Electors of Trier was actually completely enclosed by the area of ??the graphs of Luxembourg.

In the Thirty Years' War (1618-1648) the castle was substantially damaged. In 1673 the castle, which was still in the possession of the Electors of Trier, destroyed by French troops. In 1921 the Upper Burg came into the possession of the municipality Manderscheid.

The Niederburg is a rock in the valley of the Lieser. The river flows on three sides around this rock. Also separates the river hair Obernburg. The location in the valley had the advantage that one could check if the traffic in the valley and in an emergency could close. Even the valley

In 1173, the Niederburg first reported in a document. She is the ancestral seat of the Lords of Manderscheid, which ruled here as guardians of the Abbey of Echternach Luxembourg area. The abbey had at that time large parts of the area Bedense (now Bitburg) that the village Niedermanderscheid included, received royal hands. Under Wilhelm V of Manderschied, the castle and the fortifications which also expanded its reach in the village Niedermanderscheid was lying. Between 1346 and 1348 the castle was besieged by the troops of Elector Balduin von Trier, but could not take. Hair In 1457 was Dietrich III of Manderscheid beaten by the emperor to count. He had three sons, so that after his death the area disintegrated in Manderscheid-Kail, this inherited Wilhelm, Manderscheid-Schleiden, this inherited Cuno and Manderscheid-Blankenheim, this inherited Johan. The Niederburg remained in the possession of the lords of Manderscheid-Blankenheim. This, however, did not occupy it and the castle fell so steadily. Finally ruled Countess Augusta here before she had to flee. With her family in 1749 for the approaching Fransse troops to Bohemia The castle was then destroyed by the Franssen. Since 1899, the castle was owned by the Eifelverein and can be visited for a fee.
