In 2017/2018 I followed a course "Operator Small-Scale Accommodation" (B&B, holiday homes, campsite, hotel, ...). Afterwards, we did a 6-month internship at a renowned holiday domain in Bergerac.
We bought our dream house "Maison Maxou" in mid-2020, named after our grandson. This modern holiday home is located in the Périgord Vert, 150m from the "Château le Verdoyer" with its many facilities. For you FREE enjoyment!

Location & area recommendations

Additional information

Our guests can use and enjoy the many facilities at the four-star family campsite "Château Le Verdoyer" for FREE in high season. (*except for the rental of tennis court and bicycles, a contribution is requested in high season). .
In the courtyard of the castle is the reception, a cozy terrace with bar, snack bar and a shop where fresh bread rolls can be ordered. On Wednesday evenings (during the season) there is a musical evening, entertainment or a performance.
You will certainly be warmly welcomed by our neighbours Floris and Véronique, owners and managers of the ****Camping and the Château.
And all this with a smile and in Dutch !!
Let yourself be tempted! A real quality restaurant with friendly service and generous dishes, a unique terrace by the water or rather a romantic sunset dinner on an "îlot au Château"...... always fresh and local products for Périgordine and international cuisine. All dishes and wines at very democratic prices. The restaurant is open every evening except Wednesday evenings.
On that day, you can also enjoy a snack on the terrace of Snackbar Les Perroquets!
Fries, snacks, pizzas or salads ... Takeaway meals are also possible. This with a handsome menu with sympathetic prices or just nice and easy food while you watch the Lenny Disco with the kids or enjoy the Wednesday evening musical performance / concert. And this within walking distance of Maison Maxou!
The Château offers many facilities for children. Such as fun playgrounds with swings, climbing frames, sandpits and slides, scattered around the campsite (which the children always know how to find very quickly!). There is also an arcade where they can play air-hockey and table football, among other things!
During the high season there is a complete entertainment program. Outdoor games, craft workshops, activities, games, walks, etc. 6 days a week. With a different theme every week. Fun and educational and free too.
This way the parents also have some time off to enjoy dinner in the restaurant, for example.
Every Wednesday evening we organize a show for and by children: a cozy playblack show, "Verdoyer Got Talent" or a fashion show.
Every evening there is the Lenny Disco for the little ones: 30 minutes of cool choreographies. The parents can come and have a look and... Of course participate!
The children's entertainment is provided by a very good animation team in Dutch. Parents can deliver their children in confidence. Be sure to register in advance in the morning... and then "Me-Time" for the parents...

Brantôme is located 30Km – 30Min from Maison Maxou.
In the south of the Périgord Vert lies Brantôme, "the Venice of the Périgord". Board a silent electric flat boat and discover all the beauty of Brantôme for 50 minutes. With this unique boat trip, you will have the opportunity to discover a different face of Brantôme. The boat trip starts in the shadow of the "Pont Coude" from the 15th century. The quiet boat trip takes you past the abbey and the beautiful facades overlooking the river and then relax in the wooded banks of the Dronne.
During the trip, it is possible to admire the fauna and flora that nestles on the banks of the river.
The captain will make you enjoy the history and stories of Brantôme. The trip on the shallow clear waters of the Dronne takes you past a 16th-century bridge, houses from the Middle Ages and the Renaissance, the Benedictine abbey, the 11th-century bell tower, the troglodyte dwellings, the park of the monks with its 16th-century cemetery, the mill, ...
This beautiful little town is truly hooked, almost nestled with the Dronne River and has the oldest church tower in France and a magnificent statue of the Last Judgement.
Not to be forgotten are the many small shops, cozy restaurants and every Friday morning there is a market ... A must... of course on the Dronne.
The police horses of Brantôme
Horse lover? Just outside the town you will find the "Brantôme Police Horses". The owners give retired British police horses a new, safe and loving home. Ponies, donkeys, dogs, cats, sheep and goats also find a caring place there. Book your visit on www.brantomepolicehorses.com and support the charity. This shelter depends entirely on donations.
A 20-minute drive from "Maison Maxou" is the medieval village of Saint-Jean-de Côle. This destination is ideal for a half-day trip/hike. It is characterized by a charming set of medieval village houses, which converge on a central square, flanked by a castle, a church and its priory.
Saint-Jean-de-Côle is classified as one of the "Most Beautiful Villages in France" and can be visited all year round. In summer, it is full of life, decorated with flowers and a pleasure to sit on a terrace, just enjoy a quiet moment, in the heart of a typical Périgord village.
The church of Saint Jean-Baptiste, the priory and the Château de la Marthonie? These monuments are classified historically and are located in the heart of the village... It might be best to park outside the village center for a while. It is perfect for a pleasant walk with the whole family because most of the streets are pedestrianized, beautifully paved as if they emphasize the beauty of the ochre-colored stones with which the village houses are made. The heart of Saint-Jean-de-Côle is very compact, just a few alleys and crossroads, where you can get lost. Admire the many beautiful half-timbered houses with ochre stone facades and stop for a moment to admire the architectural details, carefully maintained by the inhabitants who truly love their village.
Saint-Jean-de-Côle was once a lively town, located on the road between Thiviers and Nontron. It was ideally located for trade and many carts drove to the main square with food for the monks and the inhabitants of the castle. After many adventures, the village fell asleep until it came back to life thanks to the construction of the railway in the 19th century, which allowed the connection between Brive and Angoulême. Today, this trail « La Voie Verte de Saint-Pardoux-la-Rivière à Thiviers » is a magnificent green route for cyclists, walkers, ...
Today, Saint-Jean-de-Côle is once again a quiet village, which lives mainly from tourism. What is special is that just outside the village there are quarries for the extraction of very pure quartz, which is mainly used in the car industry.
On the square, the history of Saint-Jean-de-Côle began with the construction of the Saint Jean-Baptiste church, in Romanesque-Byzantine style. It dates from the 12th century and goes hand in hand with the priory and the adjoining Gothic cloister (also listed as a Historic Monument). At the time, the complex housed 16 canons of the order of Saint Augustine. Unfortunately, the priory cannot be visited, except during heritage days.
In the small adjoining hall there are corbels that support the cornices of the church. These are subtly carved with character motifs.
Inside the church, the special interior architecture is striking... Look up and you will see that the ship was once crowned with a dome, probably imposing and heavy (more than 12 meters in diameter!). It collapsed twice and today the gaping hole is filled with a wooden floor.
A little further on we notice the "Château de la Marthonie", which was not placed there by chance... It also dates from the 12th century, before its first version, and served as protection for the priory and its monks. In the 15th century, it was the residence of Lord Pierre Mondot de la Marthonie, president of the Parliament of Bordeaux. The castle was also burned down by the English during the Hundred Years War and then rebuilt with its original towers and battlements.
A village where water plays a full role.
As its name suggests, Saint-Jean-de-Côle is built around the "Côle", a tributary of the Dronne, which flows through Bourdeilles and Brantôme. Be sure to take a walk on the esplanade of this medieval bridge in Romanesque style. It dates back to the 15th century. The wide platform is made of stones and paved with pebbles, probably found locally in the Côle... These still resonate with the sound of the carts that made the crossing at the time, then the only way to get from Nontron to Thiviers.
We continue past the bridge to have a clear view of the priory and the cloister from afar. It's a real "postcard"! Continue on the small path and be sure to take a few sips of water at the "Fountain of Love"... A spring that is said to be magical, where young people came to quench their thirst with their chosen one to be in love forever! There are also several wells and a washing place in Saint-Jean-de-Côle. Water is omnipresent.
Tip:? From spring onwards, Saint-Jean-de-Côle becomes very lively and pleasantly busy. Craft shops exhibit watercolours or regional products, cafés and restaurants welcome you with open arms... Definitely worth a visit!
