Ile de Ré, an island in the Atlantic Ocean, is very popular because of its mild climate, its beautiful, wide sandy beaches, its beautiful and clean sea and its authentic villages.
This beautiful island is nicknamed Ré la Blanche because all the houses there are white. The island is connected by a 3-kilometre-long bridge on the mainland near the city of La Rochelle in the Charente Maritime department.
There are no less than 110 km of cycle paths on the island and two of France's 'plus beaus villages' can be admired here, Ars-en-Ré and La Flotte. The small white houses with green shutters, the fragrant hollyhocks and the picturesque fishing villages provide the ultimate holiday feeling.
The mild climate is due to the warm Gulf Stream that flows past the island. The sea water is pleasant even in the pre-season. The number of hours of sunshine per year is the same as the Riviera, which is more than 2700 hours of sunshine per year.
