Apartment

This ground floor apartment can be rented for a minimum of 2 weeks. The rental price is based on an occupancy of 2 people and 1 bedroom. Would you like to rent for less than 2 weeks? Please feel free to contact us.
The price is negotiable for long-term stays.

Your holiday home with 2 bedrooms, both with air conditioning, hot water, internet and 110/220 volts, can be rented for a maximum of 4 people. The house is well secured: both electronically and with a thieves' iron.
There are 2 supermarkets within walking distance, one on the corner with Zinia street and one on the corner with Roda street. Bread is also available at the milk station shop on Van Idsinga Street. There is an ATM at the Diakonessen Hospital in Zinia Street.

“Bij Gerdia” is centrally located, near the Gemenelandsweg. An excellent base for your day trips and short excursions. The Gemenelandsweg is an important main road, along this road there are many good shops and cozy restaurants and leads directly to the city center and the many sights of Paramaribo. In the city center you can stroll through the many shopping streets, have a bite to eat or visit numerous sights: the market, waterfront, Fort Zeelandia, palm garden, mosque, synagogue and much more. It will take you about 10 minutes on foot. By taxi about 5 minutes. Would you rather go by public transport? You have the option of taking the bus at Gemenelandsweg (tamkas) or at Thompsonstraat (line 1). Walk a little further to the JA. Pengelstraat then you have a wide choice of scheduled buses. The route of line 1 goes past the Diaconessen Hospital and the Mr. Jagernath Lachmanstraat, another important main road. The Jacana Welness Resort, FinaBank, Zonnebloem Markt and SLM office are located along this road. Line 1 also takes you to the Hermitage Mall, where relatively more expensive businesses with very long opening hours are located, such as the clothing store Mango.
The entertainment center of Paramaribo is 5 to 10 minutes away by taxi and is characterized by several good restaurants and cozy bars. In the “balmy” evening hours this is the “place to be” and many tourists and locals enjoy a delicious meal, a refreshing drink or a tropical cocktail on one of the terraces.

The holiday home is located in the Moniz project (Centre resort). This project dates from the 1960s. All homes were delivered as authentic Bruynzeel homes on Hoge Neuten. All homes have now been renovated. Many residents from the early years still live there.

“Bij Gerdia” is located in a safe residential area; a neighborhood where you experience peace and old-fashioned conviviality and immediately feel at home. You will stay in a very complete apartment. Luxurious and comfortably furnished, with an eye for details. The holiday home is equipped with a large water tank, water filter and pressurized water system. This means you are not bothered by the often low water pressure and possible interruptions in the water supply. With the kettle you can easily boil tap water before consuming. The house has its own electricity meter with 3-phase power, so you can use multiple devices at the same time without any worries. There are three 220 volt sockets, in the bedrooms and in the living room. You have hot water in the shower and in the kitchen. The washing machine offers the option of washing laundry warmly.

At Gerdia you will experience Suriname as it used to be: old-fashioned fun, good mutual contact with local residents, social control and safety. Our neighbors are kind, hospitable and social. They are always up for a chat and like to get together on New Year's Eve to ring in the new year while enjoying a snack and a drink. We ensure safety in the neighborhood together via the WhatsApp Neighborhood Watch, an initiative of one of the neighbors.

The front terrace is 11m2. The “thieves' iron” allows you to stay safely on the balcony until the late hours. It is not inconceivable that you will fall asleep in the hammock while radio or TV keeps you company, provides you with a cheerful note and information. The rear terrace borders the backyard and is spacious, clean and tidy with a sink and sink. It is pleasant to stay there: the peace, shade and a wonderful wind blowing. You can also receive your visitors there. If desired, you can let the laundry dry there, the children can play or hang up a hammock. You are welcome to smoke a cigarette on the front and rear balconies because smoking is not allowed in the house. In addition to the air conditioning in the bedrooms, there are 2 standing fans in the living room. You can park your car coolly in the covered garage. In the house you will also find: the road map of Paramaribo, telephone directory, brochures and business cards of various organizations that may be useful to you.

We are Gerard and Diana, owners of "Bij Gerdia" and live in the Netherlands. We realized our dream, a home in the country of birth of Diana, in 2015. Our choice fell on this house because of its charm, the safe neighborhood and authentic atmosphere. We have taken 2 years to renovate the house. We completed this process in 2017 and immediately created our dream home. One where the thought makes a smile on our faces. Speaks the languages: English and Dutch.

Additional information

Your holiday home is an authentic Bruynzeel house that was completely renovated in 2017 and fully equipped. The house is neat, comfortable and tastefully decorated. Well secured and located in a pleasant and central neighborhood, from where you can reach the center on foot. With two balconies and a front and back garden, you can enjoy the sun and the pleasant breeze in the hammock.
You will regularly see iguanas (tree chickens) in the backyard. If they feel unwatched, they walk in the yard or on the roof of the shed. The brightly colored birds also visit frequently.

As former tenants, we have experienced that a clean and tidy house, which is also practically and comfortably furnished, contributes enormously to the holiday feeling. We have furnished the holiday home with these principles in mind. It has become our dream home and we hope you will enjoy it.
You book your trip by buying your ticket at a travel agency or via the internet. There are many Surinamese travel agencies with regularly attractive promotions, such as Parbotravel and Ercoreizen. It is useful to buy your visa at Schiphol. This prevents you from having to queue at airport Zanderij. Transport to and from your holiday address can already be arranged in the Netherlands. Garage DA Ashruf specializes in airport transportation: www.garage-ashruf.com.
You have the choice between a passenger bus or a taxi. The advantage of the taxi is that you are driven directly to your residence address. If you opt for a bus, you will be dropped off in the order of your holiday address on the route. This also has its charm, because you immediately see more of Suriname.
Parking outside the parking lot a taxi from a private individual who wants to earn some extra money is also a possibility, but we would not personally opt for this.
At the airport, provider Telesur has a kiosk. If desired, you can purchase an internet bundle for your mobile phone for use outside the home.

Practical information:
- Your passport must be valid for at least six months from the date of return.
- Recommended vaccinations are: DTP, Hepatitis A and B and Malaria. Yellow fever is mandatory. Contact the local GGD for the latest vaccination advice.
Your contact person in Suriname: Sometimes an airplane has a delay. In order to prevent unrest with you or your contact person, we would like to agree with you that you inform us of your flight number and the time you expect to land. We communicate this with the contact person. You will receive the contact's name and telephone number so that you can call her when you have landed. She will wait for you in the house and give a guided tour. Explanation where you can find everything, how everything works and take the inventory with you.
(The personal details of your contact person in Suriname are also included in the lease statement).
Your holiday accommodation is located in the WC Kennedystraat, one of the
side streets of the Thompsonstraat.
The Thomsonstraat is synonymous with the Cultural Center NAKS.
An organization for community work that aims to develop the
promote artistic and cultural traditions of the Afro-Surinamese.

The WC Kennedystraat is a fairly short street that runs from
number 1 to 14. Almost everyone who lives here, was born there and
raised. The street now houses 5 seniors of citizens, the first living
owners. They live on hands by their children and / or grandchildren
their own familiar environment. There are close friendships and family ties
among each other. The neighborhood is a mixture of various mixed population groups.
They respect each other and are ready for each other. Often heard
sound is that it is a quiet and cozy street. We have this too
to experience. No shouting, shouting or arguing. Well what belongs to the tropics: op
his time of fun and music!
And you with a parbo or rum cola on balcony ?. Maybe in
the hammock?

Restaurants on the Gemenelandsweg: Sarinah, Jawa. Bamboo, Steak house. At the south sqare plaza; juicy steaks, lucky twins, oso njang and xo lounge ... Would you rather go to a restaurant with an international kitchen? That is possible, the best known are Sensi, Spice Quest and De Waag. In addition, there are renowned restaurants with a special kitchen: Chi Min (Chinese), Garden of Eden (Thai), Lee's (Korean), Log House (African), eatery de Optimist , Las tias, Coffee Wines & More.
Have you heard of NasKip? The Surinamese variation on the KFC? You can walk there in 3 to 5 minutes.

The famous Blauwgrond district is worth a visit. For a reasonable price you can eat delicious Javanese food. Known warungs: Pawiro and Mi Roso (reservations required) .For the bite: Roti Shop Joosje, Roopram, Chris, Rambali the second Rijweg.Ook the Pizza Hut, McDonalds, Burger King, KFC, Popeys represented in Suriname.

Well-known shops on Gemenelandsweg are: Gao ming (Chinese wholesale / toko), Lin's is a large and well-stocked Chinese supermarket where you can find almost everything. Should you need something specific that you can not find here, then you will certainly succeed at Choi's at the J. Mungrastraat (via the Kolonistenweg). Choi's has a wide variety of imported food but is more expensive than other supermarkets.

The local beer, Parbo, is of excellent quality. There are also 3 radler variants available. Rum is also very popular as a mix with cola. Locally, good-quality Borgoe rum is produced, which is relatively cheap and more popular than Bacardi.
Ps .: In a liquor store you generally pay less for your alcoholic drinks.
Suriname has no shortage of markets. To name a few:
- Central Market: oldest market in Suriname. In the city center, every day except Sunday.
- Toutonnemarkt (started as flea market): Fruit, vegetables, herbs, snacks and drinks, but also second hand stuff, manual labor, small art, plants and cheap new stuff.
Tulip supermarket is also located at the Tourtonnelaan. Is open Sunday with a very wide range of European brands. Has a lunch corner, separate department (banquet) baker, sandwich and butcher shop.
- Soenamarkt or Javanese market in Noord.
- Chinesemarkt on the Wilhelminastraat at the level of too Soe Ngie.
- Kwattamarkt on the Kwattaweg at the 3rd road: Sunday, Friday and Wednesday.
- Big Boom market on the Gemenelandsweg.
Taking precautionary measures is important because small disorders can lead to inflammation faster in the tropics. It is important that you are aware of and remain aware of and respond to problems.
There are four hospitals in Paramaribo. If there is something wrong with you, you can go for medical treatment or further referral.
- Academic Hospital Paramaribo (AZP): at the Abraham Samson / Flustraat, tel. No. 442222 has an emergency department (First Aid, tel nr. 113.
- St. Vincentius Hospital: Koninginnestraat 4, tel nr. 471212 has an evening clinic.
- S 'Lands Hospitaal: a beautiful hospital made entirely of wood in authentic colonial style.
- Diaconessenhuis: Zinniastraat / Bodegravenlaan: focused on (poli) clinical care. In addition, medical specialist care is provided to inland residents, both by admission to the hospital and by consultations via radio and telephone.

You are in the tropics, unfortunately you have to deal with insects. In the interior malaria occurs (as yet not in the city). It is therefore very important that you start with a malaria treatment in advance if you want to go inland. If you experience symptoms such as headaches, fever, cold shivering and / or diarrhea after a visit to the interior, never think that it will be a flu. Only if it is excluded that you have dengue or malaria, you can suffice with the home pharmacy. In any other case you consult the BOG (Public Health Care Office.

There are mosquitoes everywhere in the coastal strip. At dusk, between 5.30 and about 7.00 pm, you are outlawed and a great source of food for them. There are drugs that are used preventively and after the bite (after-bite) such as: anti-mosquito (Autan, Deet) and anti-itch remedies (antihistamine, tea tree oil), as well as sunscreen with a high factor, cap or hat. Lubricate before nightfall. And if you are stung, do not scratch your "stab wound". This can start to infect Alcolade glacial is very poplar with the locals. It works cooling by the menthol alcohol and gives relief from itching. You can also wear protective clothing (long sleeves, long pants, socks).

Other common insects and creepers are:
- Mampira and Koproprien: nourishes your blood at any time of the day. These mosquitoes are site-bound, so by moving you you will not have any problems.
- Sand fleas or siekas still occur sporadically. These insects have it on your feet, between the toes or in the soft part under the foot. They propagate through eggs that cause a terrible itch. Always walk outside on slippers, sandals or shoes.
- Cockroaches and flies. You have more problems flying during the day. In a clean house you have less problems with it. So do not leave food or food left. In the evening the cockroaches come flying because of the light.
- Salamanders / kamrawintjie, are small house salamanders who mainly hunt for insects at night. They are useful creatures because they fly, beetle, eat mosquitoes. Did you know they love food and drinks. Therefore, do not leave drinks on the counter.
- Ants. You do not see them and suddenly they are there. They live in cracks and climb everywhere. They love sweet. Do not mess with sugar or other saline soft drinks. Over empty glasses with sweets and soft drinks quickly, then the ants are gone again. Even food remains, however small, are enough to satisfy their hunger. Therefore, clean a dirty spot immediately and clean up as much as possible.
You can fight crawling and flying insects with Baygon or Bob. Available at every store in the area.
Keep the house clean and tidy because that is the best remedy for pests.
Tip: keep sugar and salty drinks / food in the refrigerator.
The local currency is the Surinamese dollar (SRD). SRDs are only valid in Suriname, so try to prepare your SRDs during your holiday. If you have SRDs on the day of departure, you can spend them at the many tax-free shops in the JA.Pengel airport waiting area. There is a lot of foreign money in Suriname, the Euro and US dollar are very popular. If you take foreign money with you, you can exchange it with the many cambios that Suriname has. Besides the cash register you can also go to some drive-in cambio's. Because you do not have to get out of the car, this gives a safe (er) feeling. Usually there are also security guards present which extra reinforces this feeling.
At various banks you can use your master card to debit SRDs from the ATMs.
In the center and around the Central Market, you are guaranteed to be approached by illegal money changers to exchange money at a more favorable price. You should NOT do this.
Your safety is worth a lot to us. The holiday accommodation is electronically secured and through thieves iron. The Buurtwacht whatsapp is there to keep the sense of security true. The mutual contact between the neighbors is very good.
As relatively new neighbors we are soon included and with the festive and birthdays we are part of the fun. In the street one feels involved and responsible for each other. The neighbors monitor the safety unnoticed. Yet you must always be and remain alert. Doors / gates locked if you want to move carefree in and around the house. If you are on the front balcony, you can leave the door open from the living room to the balcony, but you can lock the door at the "Thief Iron Cage".
Go away: always lock everything, possibly let the light burn inside. The outdoor lighting will automatically switch on / off. Do not leave anything of value in the garden or balcony. After all, you should not bind any bacon for the cat.
General tip! If you simply present yourself, you will not notice and have little trouble with criminals.
Surinamese horror of the idea that shoes are run in the house. So pull out your shoes, slippers, sandals before you enter a house. We would appreciate it if you follow this rule in the holiday home.

Making contact with Surinamese is relatively easy because everyone speaks Dutch. In general, politeness is appreciated in Suriname. People will not be tolerated easily, older people will not, but their peers will not.

In general, the same rules of civility apply here as in the Netherlands. You will notice that there is a great cordiality and love for the Netherlands in almost all Surinamese hearts. Everything is possible, as long as you show interest in the host country. Surinamese are rightly proud of their country.
One of the most frequently asked questions to foreigners is "What do you think of our country?".
Surinamese will not easily ask intimate questions in conversations; certain topics, such as marriage, relationship, salary or health, are thought to belong to the private sphere that people do not talk about. A Surinamese loves his family.
Family life goes above all else. But in addition, Surinamese are generally also very hospitable towards others. You will be invited regularly, especially if you have got to know people better.
"Come along" is really meant as an open invitation. In the Netherlands we have become accustomed to always make an appointment. These do not find many Surinamese superfluous. No one will be surprised if suddenly you are unannounced on the sidewalk.

As a rule, meat is not deboned (especially poultry), which means that you will constantly have to remove bones and other inedible parts.
The dishes can be pretty sharp (the cook or cook has "put pepper"!).

Most houses do not have a bell to call; it is up to you to make your arrival clear in a different way. If there are dogs in the yard, they will as a rule take on the task of messenger and inform their bosses of your arrival. Wait until you have received the signal safely from the gentleman or woman of the house! In other cases you call: "Knock, knock!".

Umbrellas should never be opened indoors; that brings bad luck. A much heard Surinamese advice is "no spang", do not worry. An advice that is related to the slower pace of life than in the Netherlands. For newcomers in Paramaribo, who from time to time will be excited about (alleged) indifference and disinterest in the people they meet, this advice is very important.
In the Netherlands people have the clock and in Suriname the time.
Suriname has a lot to offer, both day trips in and around Paramaribo / in the coastal region and multi-day excursions to the Amazon / inland.

Day trips: Republic, Blakawatra, Colakreek, Marinalex, White Beach, Overbridge and Carolina Creek are destinations at about an hour's drive from Paramaribo, towards the airport. There are simple facilities for overnight stay. On the Republic and Overbridge one can rent a house (book in advance).

Commewijne, on the other side of the Suriname river, offers a beautiful cycling area. You can visit Fort Nieuw Amsterdam, the old sugar plantation Mariënburg and other old plantation houses. The old plantation Peperpot is accessible by car and the recently restored Frederiksdorp is recommended by boat across the Commewijne River.

Saramacca is a beautiful part of the Suriname delta. Here too, the bicycle is the best mode of transport. Groningen is a good stopover on this trip; in different ways one reminds one of the peasantry farmers who emigrated 150 years ago from the Netherlands.

Brownsberg is a nature reserve 130 km south of Paramaribo. There are several walks that each lead to beautiful waterfalls. On top of the mountain there is a spectacular view over the Brokopondo reservoir, which was formed by the dam built in the 1950s.

Jodensavanna is a former settlement of Portuguese Jews. The area is full of historical relics that unfortunately are rapidly being surrendered to the tropical rainforest.

Matapica can only be visited by boat. On the beach you will find giant tortoises between February and August. Bird lovers and fishermen can also enjoy themselves.

A day trip on the Suriname River is an experience. With a large covered canopy, various sights are visited such as old plantation houses and a former leper colony. On the so-called "sandbank" one takes a bath.

Santigron is located 30 km south of Paramaribo. It is a traditional forest cemetery village where old customs are kept alive. One can enjoy a river trip, an encounter with the village council and traditional dances.

St. Laurent du Maroni is located on the French bank of the Marowijne river, opposite Albina. The journey takes three hours, but for those who like a good French lunch and like to make some French delicacies, the trip is definitely worth it.

Nickerie is the rice barn of Suriname. A trip to this place on the west bank of the Corantijn River opposite (former British) Guyana can be made in one day. There is so much to enjoy on the way in Coronie and Wageningen that it would be a shame to only spend one day here.

A day trip / excursion booked directly with your own booking agency is cheaper than with a tour operator such as Anaula Nature Ressort and Bergendal River Ressort. These are the comfortable acquisitions in the Surinamese interior.
At Activitycenter Berg en Dal you can go canopywalk, mountain biking, boating and abseiling.

Excursions to the Amazon.
The interior can be visited, either by plane or by car or dug-out. The accommodation in the interior is, if present, simple. Sleeping often occurs in hammocks or simple cabins. If you opt for luxury, you can go to Palumeu.

One should not underestimate the risks of a trip to the interior. See "health factors and hygiene".

Blanche Marie and Raleigh Vallen are both holiday resorts where beautiful waterfalls can be admired. Moreover, you can make beautiful climbing tours.

Kumalu and Palumeu are located at the soela's (rapids) of the Suriname and Tapanahony rivers. From the more southerly situated Kasikasima mountains one has magnificent views over Brazil.

The beach at Galibi houses giant tortoises as well as Matapica. Galibi consists of the Caribbean-Indian villages of Langamankondre and Christiaankondre which are well worth a visit.

From Nickerie and Wageningen, a comfortable boat can be used for several-day trips on several rivers in the west of the country (through malaria-free areas).
On the other side of the country, the longest and most versatile river trip begins at Albina and crosses the Marowijne River upstream with the final destination of the Trio Indian village of Apetina. Langatabbetje, Stoelmanseiland and Drietabbetje are some of the colorful names of places where the boatswain sends his boat skillfully along and over the soelas. Tablets are islands; they can best be admired from the canoe.

For one or multi-day trips: celestial tours suriname, orangesuriname.com, urgill eco tour. You can also pass by Zus en Zo on the large combeweg.
How much rent do I have to pay:
By following the steps of the reservation request you can easily calculate your rental price. Click on date of departure and date of arrival and you will see the rent. You can do this as often as you want, as long as you do not confirm or send anything, there will be no reservation.

Is there a swimming pool: No.
Close to home you can go to Vos on the Gemenelandsweg, Parima Swimming Pool: JA Pengelstraat/ and Jacana Welnessressort Commewijnestraat/ mr. J.Lachmanstraat. Other large hotels where you can swim for a reasonable fee are Resisence Inn, Krasnapolsky, Torarica, Merriot and Ramada. If you prefer a natural swimming pool, you can visit Overbridge, White Beach or Cola Creek.

Does the house have air conditioning: Yes.
Air conditioning in both bedrooms and 1 standing fan. An additional advantage of air conditioning is that mosquitoes stay at a distance. Bedroom 2 also has a mosquito net, if you do not want to sleep with the air conditioning but with a (standing) fan. You can use this fan anywhere in the house for when you want it fresher. We ask you to keep all windows and doors in the bedrooms closed when the air conditioning is on. The capacity of the air conditioning is calculated on the size of the bedrooms.

Are bed linen, bath towels, hand and tea towels available: Yes.
This is included in the rent. The beds are neatly made on the day of arrival. We ask that you remove dirty bed linen from the beds on the day of check-out. For all dirty laundry, if they are dry, they can be deposited in the laundry basket. Are they wet? Let them hang or let them dry.
If bed linen, bath towels, etc. are irreparably soiled or broken, they must be replaced with a new equivalent or reasonably contribute to a new one.

Do you have 220 volts: Yes.
At 3 sockets, 2 in the bedrooms and 1 in the living room. So feel free to bring your Dutch shaver, hair dryer, electric toothbrush, etc.

Is there hot water: Yes.
In the bathroom and kitchen. The washing machine has a warm wash program. Suriname is a warm country, a cold shower can cool you down. This statement does not hold in the morning. If you sleep with air conditioning or a fan, a warm shower is nice. The choice is yours. In the kitchen you can also use hot water. Your crockery and kitchen utensils will be clean and grease-free faster.

Is there internet: Yes.
You will receive the code from us to log in.

Check in and out.
The contact person will go through the inventory with you on the day of arrival. On the day of departure, you must leave the house broom clean, pick up bed linen, do the dishes, take out the rubbish. The inventory will be discussed with you . If damage is found, a settlement will take place. If there is no damage to the inventory and interior, the deposit will be returned within 1 (one) week.
Deposit: E.250,--.

There are several local radio stations, of which Radio Apintie (97.1 Fm), ABC (101.7 Fm) and SRS Par'bo (96.3 Fm) are the oldest and best known. The (FM-stereo) program is reasonably varied and is mostly provided in Dutch. Some radio stations broadcast the Dutch news broadcasts of Radio Netherlands Worldwide, as well as the Dutch Top 50.
The Dutch World Service is also very well received in Suriname on the short wave.

Some Dutch-language television stations can be received via the antenna on the home, of which ABC, Apintie, ATV and STVS are the most important.
In addition, there are a number of channels that focus on Hindustani, Javanese or Chinese audiences. The predominantly American feature films and television series are neither subtitled nor dubbed. There are many programs of a religious nature, talk shows and football.
In addition, part of the program offer of BVN-TV (Dutch TV on the satellite) is being radiated. For example, the NOS news, NOVA and Studio Sport are broadcast daily. In addition, news blocks from CNN and BBC are being taken over.
