My name is Cees van Dijck (1950). My wife Corrie and I bought this apartment in 2000. We bought the apartment at the time, because we are in love with Spain because of the always beautiful weather, the temperament of the Spaniards, the outdoor culture, traditions and parties. We were born in Breda, but have lived in Oosterhout, Zwolle, Hoogmade and Leiderdorp in recent years. Since 2006 we live in Driebergen. We found out that they bake bread everywhere.

Location & area recommendations

Additional information

Semana Santa is celebrated every year in the week before Easter in Spain. In southern Spain in particular, there is an age-old tradition of so-called "Tronos" which are carried through the city. The bigger the size of the place, the bigger the size of the event. In particular, Malaga and Valentia are famous for the Semana Santa. Malaga has 25 parishes (!). On one of the days of the Semana Santa, each parish transports its image of a saint (usually of Mary) from the parish to the center of the city where thousands of Spaniards attend the processions. It is recommended to take the train to Malaga center.
Every first full week in October Fuengirola celebrates its Feria. At that time Fuengirola honors its patron saint: the virgin of Rosario. The Feria begins with a mass outside the church where the statue is set up in the Plaza de la Constitucion. The statue of the virgin stands on a stretcher (trono) and is then carried on the shoulders of 100 men through the center of the city. That week there are festivities in all kinds of places throughout the city (Plaza Feria).
An absolute must to do once is walking the Camenito del Rey. This is an old trade route through the mountains, which served as such centuries ago. If you have a car yourself, I advise you to book directly with the organization. That saves a lot of money, because many travel organizations offer trips there.
An hour's drive from Fuengirola is the old town of Ronda with its ancient aqueduct.
For every tourist who has not been to southern Spain before, a visit to the Alhambra is an absolute must. In the distant past, southern Spain was an area where the Moors (Mohammedans) often stayed for a long time. This area played an important role in the struggle between Catholic Spain and the Mohammedans from Africa. The Alhambra is an example of beautiful Moorish architecture. It is recommended to book in advance, because the Alhambra is visited by many tourists.
The city of Cordoba is particularly known for the Mesquita, a centuries-old mosque complex, part of which has been built as a cathedral. Here, too, the power struggle between Catholics and Moslems is clearly visible.
One of the most obvious outings is a visit to Mijas Pueblo. The old village is still very original and offers a glimpse into the real Spain. The advantage is that it is close to Fuengirola and from there offers an incredibly beautiful view of the area.
Within a reasonable driving distance from Fuengirola is the city of Seville, which already hosted the World Exhibition (1992) 30 years ago. Because cities such as Ronda, Granada and Seville are located more inland from Andalusia, the authenticity of Spain is clearly visible here.
