Additional information

From the green valley of the Guadalquivir unexpectedly a rugged, gray mountain range rises. In this piece of Andalusia, something seems to have gone wrong with the coordination of various landscape elements. The result is spectacular ... The wonderful piece of nature was created by a geological process that took millions of years and is one of the most impressive examples of a karst landscape in Europe. The term "karst" is a term for all geological processes that have to do with the erosion of limestone by water. In the Jurassic Age, between 250 and 150 million years ago, the waves of the ocean were still splashing over this part of the Iberian Peninsula. Due to the enormous pressure of the water mass, the piled up limestone sediments on the bottom were increasingly compressed and their structure influenced by the salt. The seabed slowly emerged from the water between the African and European continent and is now more than 1300 meters above sea level. The park is close to the village of Villanueva de la Concepcion. The reception and parking can be reached from there via an asphalted road. There are three walking routes in the park, with lengths of 1.5 km (green route), 2.5 km (yellow route) and 4.5 km (red route). The three routes have in common that after every few meters that is covered and after every turn a new bizarre combination of sculptures becomes visible. Together they form a kind of natural open air museum. To explore El Torcal well, it is advisable to wear sturdy shoes with a good profile. Paths are bumpy and there are loose stones. Access to the nature park is free. Guides (by appointment) are charged. Departure early in the morning to avoid most walkers and high temperatures. In this largest karststone mountains in Europe, 20 ammonites are hidden on a plateau. The largest ones have a diameter of +/- 30 cm ...! Only rarely do tourists find these valuable fossils (unless with a guide), but if you kindly ask the Dutch park manager (I forgot his name but he can usually be found at the reception) he will show you the shortest route. From the plateau where the ammonites are located, you have the most beautiful view of Andalusia. Furthermore, with some luck, you can spot thirty orchid species, lizard snakes, pearl lizards, griffon vultures, Spanish ibex, badgers, weasels and all kinds of rodents.
This beautiful mountain village is at +/- 35 km. and watches over western Axarquía, like a watchtower, at about 700 meters above sea level. The cemetery at the highest point is certainly worth a visit. The view over la Axarquía is beautiful. The walking route (follow the footprints in the tiles) through the narrow streets is fun and gives you a good impression of the village and the surrounding area. You can combine this trip with a visit to Lake Viñuela or El Torcal.
The beautiful lake La Viñuela has a capacity of 170,000,000 cubic meters of water and is artificially laid out. The main function is the water supply for the region. Along the lake are some nice picnic areas, some with barbecues. Swimming is allowed.
Start or end point of the Ruta Mudégar (see below). Small white mountain village of clear Moorish origin. Especially known for the annual "Feria de la Mula" (feast of the mule). The small center is a jumble of narrow and winding streets, squares and corners full of flowers. In the center is the village square with the 16th century church mosque of "Santa Catalina" that was built on top of the ruins of the 12th century mosque. Arenas also has 2 popular walking routes, one to the Bentomiz hill and the other to the Cerro Alto next to the Salares river.
Above Arenas and 500 m from our house are the ruins of the castle of Bentomiz (Moorish castle that was built over a Roman site). This castle played an important defensive role during the Moorish occupation and was used as a refuge to repel the Catholic attacks in 1483. In 1487 the Catholic King Fernando camped near Arenas, giving it the nickname "Arenas del Rey". The Bentomiz castle surrendered to Fernando and this led to the fall of Vélez-Málaga and the entire region on April 27, 1487, despite the heavy defense of the Moorish king in Granada “El Zagal”.
This water park is located just outside of Torre del Mar and offers fun for everyone with a variety of attractions.
voted the most beautiful and whitest village in Andalusia. The village dates from 1767 and is one of the best preserved Moorish places.
visit the very special round cemetery in Sayalonga.
Archez is a sleepy village next door where almost no tourists come. It is a stone's throw from the much busier and touristy Competa and also lives for a large part of the vineyards that dominate the hills here. Archez has unmistakable Moorish roots. The beautiful 16th century “Iglesia de Nuestra Senora de la Encarnacion” (Church of the Incarnation) has a typical mudéjar minnaret, which is older and dates from the 14th century. The minaret was built on a former mosque by the Nasriden tribe in the same period as the Alhambra in Granada. This church is one of the better preserved remnants of the mudéjar culture. The original Arabic texts are still clearly visible on the minaret.
Cómpeta is located at an altitude of around 638 m and is one of the most beautiful white villages of Andalusia. The charming village is located at the foot of the Sierra Tejeda y Almijara Natural Park. Almonds and honey are important typical local products. The landscape is characterized by mountains with olive and fruit trees and many vineyards, where the sweet Málaga wine is produced. The picturesque village lies on the Ruta del Sol y Vino (wine route) with narrow, winding streets, whitewashed houses and a beautiful village church. The oldest church in the village is "La Asunción". Built in the 16th century in the Baroque-Mudejar style and is special because of the beautiful statues. The church stands on the main square, the Plaza Almajira, with an image of the history of Cómpeta displayed in tiles. The village dates from the late 14th century and the Moorish influences are also clearly visible here.
Nerja is famous for its stalactite caves, the "Cuevas de Nerja", a historic monument, located 3 kilometers from the center. The surface of the caves is 35,484 m2 and the volume 264,379 m3. The central column of the immense caves has a height of no less than 32 meters and a width of 18 meters. The Nerja caves therefore have the widest column in the world. The caves were only discovered in 1959 by a couple of children playing. The wall drawings found prove that the caves were already inhabited around 20,000 years before Christ. Nerja itself is a friendly and versatile place to wander around with as its main attraction the "Balcon de Europa" from where you have a beautiful view of the Mediterranean sea and the coast of the Costa del Sol. A short distance from Nerja towards the village of Maro you will find the Acueducto de Águila (Aqueduct of the Eagle). This was originally built to provide the sugar factory in Maro with water. Now that it no longer exists, the aqueduct is still in use and the farmers in the area use it to irrigate their fields. The aqueduct is easy to see from a special panorama point where you can take the most beautiful photos. If you stand at this point, you look at the rear of the structure and you also see a number of damage that it sustained during various bombings. Part of the damage has been repaired in the current century, but not everything. Just beyond Maro, the ends of the mountains run back into the sea, creating numerous beautiful little coves with crystal clear water, ideal for snorkeling. There are several parking places along the road to enjoy the view and / or walk through small roads to the beach.
One of the nicest walks you can take in Andalusia is undoubtedly the walk through the Rio Chillar, just above Nerja. In the beginning, the footpath is still wide and you can easily keep your feet dry. But at some point you have to jump from stone to stone until the path becomes so narrow that the water is above your ankles. Along the way you come across a waterfall and a bit further a deeper part where you can swim. Because you walk in the water and at the end between the rocks, this walk can also be done in the summer.
has a wide sandy beach with all kinds of facilities and a beautiful promenade of no less than 4 kilometers long. One of the few authentic beaches on the Costa del Sol, which is most visited by Spanish families. You can eat well in one of the many chiringuitos on the beach, where sardines and other fish are grilled in a wooden boat over a wood fire.
The city is located 47 km north of the city of Málaga, at the foot of the El Torcal and El Arco Calizo Chimenea mountain ranges, 575 m above sea level. The city overlooks a fertile valley, bordering on the south side of the Sierra de los Torcales and on the north side of the river Guadalhorce. The location of the city is impressive: with many remains of ancient city walls and a Moorish castle that towers over the city on an overhanging rock. Antequera is known as the 'heart of Andalusia' because of its central location between the provinces of Málaga, Granada, Córdoba and Sevilla. Just outside the snow-white town of Antequera, just a few kilometers away, are the Dolmen or Dolmens. You can visit these archaeological wonders up to 5,000 years old: the Menga Dolmen, the Viera Dolmen and the Tholos de El Romeral Dolmen. They were added to the UNESCO World Heritage List on July 15, 2016. They became the seventh UNESCO World Heritage Site in Andalusia and the 45th UNESCO site in all of Spain! Two mountain formations belong to this geological complex: La Peña de los Enamorados ('Rock of the Enamored') and El Torcal de Antequera. Both played an important role in choosing the location for the Hunebeds when they were built thousands of years ago. With nearly 30 meters, the Menga Dolmen are the longest in Europe. The largest stone weighs a phenomenal 180 tonnes - that is 140 tonnes more than the largest stone at Stonehenge, at least four times more! The entrance to the Menga is oriented to the northeast in 45 degrees, with a perfect view of the Peña de los Enamorados. The Menga are among the few Hunebeds in Europe that overlook a natural sight.
- Malaga (35 km) - Granada (110 km) - Jaén (200 km) - Cordoba (200 km) - Seville (250 km) - Ronda (160 km) ...
The beautiful and peaceful ski resort of the Sierra Nevada is at +/- 125 km. With 131 pistes, good for 110 km of skiing pleasure, this ski resort is the largest in southern Europe. The ski lifts bring winter sports enthusiasts from 2100 to 3282 meters. The winter sports season runs from December to the end of April
The path was constructed around 1901 to make the transport of goods and personnel to and from the plant between the Choro and Gaitanejo waterfalls easier. After a construction period of 4 years, the trail was officially opened in 1905. King Alfonso XIII of Spain used the trail in 1921 with the inauguration of the dam Conde del Guadalhorce. The path is therefore named after the king; El Caminito del Rey (the royal path). The hiking trail became obsolete and was life-threatening for years. In some places the path consisted only of a few narrow metal beams. The old path can still be seen, it runs under the current safe path. Reserve tickets well in advance via their website.
