Casa do Moinho means house with the mill. Our old granite holiday home is located on the river 'Rio Vouga' in the beautiful green region of Alta Beira in the Dão region. Delicious wine is made in the Dão region. Scattered in the green hills with vineyards are small charming villages.

We bought Casa do Moinho in 2016 and had it refurbished. We have kept everything in its original state as much as possible. Like the old fireplace in the living room. The house can accommodate up to 4 people. Downstairs, adjacent to the terrace and veranda, is a (always cool in the summer) lovely kitchen with dishwasher, Nespresso machine (cups available) and all other facilities. A staircase leads upstairs to a landing to which the 2 bedrooms and bathroom with toilet and walk-in shower are adjacent.

In the living room you will find lots of games, a bookcase full of books and a record player with singles and LPs. Outside is a beautiful terrace where you can relax. There is a barbecue. The 4×8 meter saltwater swimming pool with terrace and sun loungers is another place to relax and enjoy.

Casa do Moinho is walled and is free but not isolated. Our first neighbors can be found 300-500 meters away. Around the house are several places where you can retreat, if you want. The area is quiet and safe and there is a breathtaking silence and tranquility in the morning and evening. We are still impressed by the beautiful starry sky every time.

We have given half of the watermill and management to a local farmer. From May to October he grinds his corn into flour, his wife bakes delicious cornbread and they sell it at the local market. Who knows, the farmer might put lettuce, tomatoes or onions in front of you. As the Portuguese are: generous.

Finally, we enjoy the wonderful and soft water of our own water source time and time again . Half the village used to come here to get water and we are still often told that our spring water is the best in the area. This water is for drinking and showering and is heated by a solar water heater.

Our names are Kassandan and Gert Jan. If you come to live in one of our houses for a period of time, we want you to come home. We have fallen in love with the Portuguese people, the nature, the peace, the simplicity and the self-sufficiency. We have refurbished the house with local residents and kept the originality intact. Explanation of the prices & cancellation policy

The tenant can cancel the rental agreement in writing up to 6 weeks before the start of the rental period. If the tenant cancels the agreement in the period up to 6 weeks before the start date of the rental period, he will continue to owe 30% of the rent; in case of cancellation up to 4 weeks 40% and from 2 weeks to the start date of the rental period 50%. If the tenant only announces on the start date or during the rental period that he will not make any use of the leased property, he will continue to owe the full rent.

Location & area recommendations

Additional information

Portugal is a real hiking country. From our house there are many hiking possibilities: self-marked walks of 5 to 8 km and three PR routes of 15, 18 and 21 km. These walks are well marked.
A little further away, in the Serra da Estrela, it is bursting with hiking opportunities. You can do these walks with or without an overnight stay.
Also in the Douro, at Penalva do Castelo there are hiking opportunities. In the casa there are walking routes and guides.

In addition to the old miller house that has been converted into a holiday home, there is a water mill on our property. The mill was made available to the local farmer to grind his corn into flour. The old forno (oven) is still next to the house. There is an old Roman road crossing past the house, which is still used by hikers and local farmers. The piece of grassland to the river also belongs to our house, together with the left part of the mill. Holiday home Casa do Moinho in Beira Alta is located on the river 'Rio Vouga'. In the green hills of the Dão region you will still encounter horse & wagon and you can stroll through the narrow streets of the small villages with village cafes and local markets. The region is also excellent for sporting activities such as hiking, mountain biking, horseback riding or outdoor sports.

In the Beiras region you will find beautiful cities such as Viseu, Aveiro, Coimbra and Lamego. The Douro region is also highly recommended. This is where the Port comes from and you will find many valleys with grape vines and rivers. The Douro can be combined well with Porto or Lamego. When you come home from a day out, you feel the peace return. That's what guests say to us.

Did you know that in our region you often pay the same for a bottle of wine in a restaurant as in the supermarket? Isn't that fantastic? Apart from all the delicious affordable wines, everything about Portuguese wine is just good. Be sure to try the light Vino Verde as an aperitif!

Do you like good and pure food? Then you're in the right place in the Beira. We love Pulpo, 'melting your tongue' squid tentacles marinated in garlic. Other favorites include a delicious beef stew or Balcahau. The food is basic but good and tasty. Eating out is often cheaper than cooking yourself. Isn't it wonderful when you're on holiday?
