De Hertenhoeve

De Hertenhoeve is situated in the middle of "De Kempische Landgoederen" (The Utrecht, Gorp and Roovert, Wellenseind, the Hoevens and Nieuwkerk). De Hertenhoeve is located in the middle of the area of the so-called Acht Zalheden,
the name for eight villages in the Dutch Kempen. It concerns the villages of Duizel, Eersel, Hulsel, Knegsel, Netersel, Reusel, Steensel and Wintelre.
The name, an allusion to the Sermon on the Mount, refers to the -sel on which the name of these villages ends.
The oldest mention of the name Eight Beatitudes dates from the 19th century. The Eight Beatitudes are said to owe their nickname to the Dutch soldiers who were billeted here during the Belgian Revolution around 1830 and mocked the region as poverty. The selligities, also called wretches, were then scornfully converted into Beatitudes.
