Holiday homes in Garderen
Garderen is an authentic village on the west side of the Hoge Veluwe National Park. Garderen has been a popular destination for a wonderful holiday or a
weekend getaway in the Netherlands for decades. Young and old enjoy the beautiful surroundings and the charm of the village all year round. A walk through the old centre is highly recommended, with the beautifully restored Reformed Church from the 11th century as the main attraction. You will find numerous boutiques, small supermarkets and warehouses where you can do some serious
shopping. However, most visitors come to Garderen to admire the lovely Veluwe and the surrounding forests, including the Speulderbos. So grab a bike or put on your walking shoes and discover the beauty of Gelderland.
Exploring the area of Garderen
A holiday home in Garderen is an ideal base for
cycling or
walking in the Veluwe. There are numerous well-marked routes in and around the park that will take you around the most beautiful spots. There are also special routes for people in a wheelchair. Keep your eyes and ears open, because you could come face to face with a deer or a wild boar. There are also various sights nestled in the middle of the nature reserve. For example, visit the 14th-century Rosendael Castle, with its impressive shell gallery. Another recommendation is the former Radio
Kootwijk broadcasting station near the town of the same name, in the middle of the unique Kootwijkerzand nature reserve. There are plenty of other things to see and do in and around Garderen. Every year from April to the end of October, the Veluwe Sand Sculpture Festival is organised, with beautiful works of art made entirely of sand. Or go to one of the other pretty towns in the area, such as
Lunteren or
Putten.

Nice things to know about Garderen
- The name Garderen is a combination of two ancient Germanic words: ‘garre’ (gaarde), meaning farmland, and ‘haar’, a sandy ridge.
- A culinary speciality is the ‘Garderense bol’, a multigrain bun filled with raisins, currants, chocolate drops and sugar.
- In the middle of the Speuldersbos forest lies a deep hole: the Solsche Gat, and mysterious stories are told about this hole. There is said to have once been a monastery here that was swallowed up by the earth, after which the ghosts of the monks still haunt the area. The explanation from the forest management is more likely: the hole may be a relic from the Ice Age or an old clay quarry.
