Holiday house

Casa La Cappella

Casa La Cappella dates back to 1700 and is the upper part of a palazzo of a noble family who lived here for hundreds of years. It is located in the centro storico (historical center) on the edge of the village and is built at the top of a steep ridge in the highest part of the village. From the house you have a beautiful view of the green hills, overgrown with olive trees and on the sea.
In the summer there is a breeze from the sea in the morning and in the evening the wind comes from the mountains, so that, thanks to the old thick walls, it always stays nice and cool in the house. In the street opposite the house is an old chapel, La Cappella Maria della Grazia. There is also a small parking lot where the car can be parked.

Casa La Cappella was completely renovated in 2009, while retaining as many original details as possible. In the spring of 2011, a large terrace of 34 square meters and an extra room were realized on a part of the roof. This terrace offers panoramic views of the Gulf of Policastro. The atmosphere of the past is well preserved by the high walls with old chestnut wood ceilings, the old wooden interior doors and the high French doors with panoramic views. The apartment has an area of ?? 145 m2.

From the entrance in the street a large stone staircase leads to the living floor. Most of the rooms are located on one floor. Both new bathrooms are tiled in the local style of the Amalfi coast and contain a toilet and bidet, a sink and a comfortable walk-in shower. The new kitchen is fully equipped with fridge, oven, stove with extractor fan and washing machine. On the roof terrace you have a fantastic view of the village, the Gulf of Policastro and the surrounding mountains.

On the first floor you will find:
  • a spacious kitchen (9 m2)
  • a bathroom (4 m2)
  • a double bedroom (12 m2)
  • a large guest room (22 m2) with double bed and a single bed with bathroom en suite (5m2)
  • a living room (20 m2) with French doors with balcony
  • a large work / dining room (27 m2) with French doors and balcony
  • a spacious hall (9m2) with an open staircase to the second floor
On the second floor you will find: a spacious, well-insulated bedroom (25 m2), with two single beds and direct access to the spacious roof terrace (34 m2).

We are Hans and Marga Pilon. After having camped in Italy for years, where we went further and further to the South, we discovered Il Cilento (200 km south of Naples). We found everything that makes Italy so attractive: a beautiful coast with secluded coves and beautiful beaches, untouched nature, mountains, authentic villages, culture, good food, a wonderful climate and a friendly, hospitable population.

Additional information

Vibonati is a medieval village, located on the Gulf of Policastro. It lies on an elongated hilltop at 150 m altitude and three kilometers from the sea, on the edge of the large National Park 'Il Cilento'.
The medieval character is still completely preserved. A large part of the historic center can only be reached on foot and consists of a maze of narrow alleyways and stairs that lead to densely built old houses. Time seems to have stood still here.
The village is dominated by the beautiful church of Sant'Antonio Abate, located at the highest point of the village. From the church square you have a magnificent view of the surrounding mountains, sea and hills covered with olive groves.
Vibonati is a lively village with, as in the entire Cilento, a friendly and hospitable people who are proud of its culture and traditions. There are regular processions from the different churches. The highlight is the feast of Sant Antonio d'Abate, the patron saint of the village, on 17 January. Family members from all over Italy and abroad come back to Vibonati to have a week of celebration. Also the chapel in the street opposite Casa La Cappella is widely used.
On the first Sunday of July the feast of the Madonna is celebrated. The little square next to our house and the street is beautifully decorated and covered with flowers. Even in the summer months, traditions are celebrated with parties. Food parties with traditional music and dance are regularly organized.

The Cilento is one of the most beautiful areas of Italy, not yet discovered by mass tourism, where everything is present for a wonderful holiday:
• a crystal clear sea
• deserted beaches
• lonely mountain villages where time seems to stand still
• olive groves
• wooded mountains with pure mountain streams
• picturesque coastal towns
• marked hiking routes

The Cilento is called the green tongue of Italy. Thanks to the many rivers, it is always green, even in summer. In 1990 a large part of the area was declared 'Parco del Cilento e Vallo di Diano'. It has also been on the Unesco World Heritage List since 1998, preserving the unique character of the area. The Cilento is the second largest National Park in Europe with an area of ??more than 180,000 ha.
The coastline of more than 100 km consists of beautiful beaches with azure water, steep cliffs with remote bays, sometimes only accessible by boat. The beaches are among the cleanest in all of Italy. Apart from the Italian holiday months of July and August, the beaches are almost empty. The sea is also a paradise for divers.
The mountains are overgrown with Mediterranean scrub and olive trees laid out in terraces. The ancient olive trees have probably been introduced by the Greeks. Especially around Pisciotta you will find many olive groves.
More inland you will find extensive oak and chestnut forests. A true paradise for flora and fauna, such as otters and wolves. The highest peaks of the Cilento are the Monte Cervati (1899 m) and the Monte Bulgheria. (1224 m). From here you have beautiful views of the Gulf of Policastro.
The coastal road along the Gulf runs from Scario along many sand - pebble beaches to Sapri, the largest town in the region with many shops and an intercity station. Here are also small-scale hotels and apartments. Until mid July and from September it is very quiet here. In the high season there are many Italians, but even then there are no crowds.
The inland is also worthwhile. Here it is also very quiet in high season. A few kilometers from the coast there are many authentic villages in the mountains such as San Christoforo, Ispani, and Vibonati. You will find beautiful views, a hospitable population and nice restaurants where you can eat delicious and affordable.
From Sapri the coastal road continues towards Maratea. This is a beautiful route, with glimpses on an azure blue sea. Maratea is a beautiful village halfway up the hill with a nice harbor. The attraction of Maratea is a huge statue of the Redeemer, perched on the mountain, which can be seen in clear weather from the entire Gulf of Policastro. After the famous statue at Buenos Aires, this is the largest image of the Savior in the world.
There is also plenty to do for culture lovers. In Paestum there are impressive temples from Greek times. There are Greek excavations on the coast near Velia. In the interior part of Il Cilento there are monasteries and fortresses. For example, Padula is the largest monastery complex in southern Italy. (Certosa di San Lorenzo) And for those who have time to spare Pompeii and beautiful Naples are recommended to visit. Both are easily accessible by train.
