From Utrecht you will reach our driveway with old lime trees after 900 km and you will arrive at our castle "Chateau de la Barre" (1487). The domain has a total of 5 gites, 2 of which are used, so you have no direct neighbours. Gite "Jean-Hélie" (for 4 people) was renovated in 2020 while retaining original details and is fully equipped.

On the ground floor you have the kitchen, sitting and dining area in one room with patio doors to the south-facing terrace with unobstructed views of the estate with orchard. If desired, when the time comes, you can pick a fresh apple or pear for breakfast. If you would like to sit in the shade now and then, you can do so in the courtyard of the chateau.
The kitchen is equipped with fridge / freezer, dishwasher, induction hob, Nespresso coffee machine, airfryer, kettle, salad spinner.
On the 1st floor there is 1 bedroom with a double bed (2.10 x 1.80) and 1 bedroom with 2 single beds (2.00 x 0.90). Both bedrooms have air conditioning. In addition, there is a modern bathroom with a walk-in shower.

The gite has a TV with chrome cast and DVD player. A high chair, a cot (1.10 x 0.55) and a children's pool are available on request.

The Charente, bordering the Dordogne to the south, has a rich history and La Barre is an excellent base for discovering it. Our estate is located 20 km north of Angoulême, 45 km east of Cognac and 100 km north of Perigeux.

We are Bernard and Sandra and have been able to make our dream come true by moving to France and living in a chateau. After a few years of renovation, the chateau is habitable again and we are now ready with 2 gîtes and you can enjoy the space and the quiet, beautiful French life in the countryside of the Charente, just like us.

Additional information

The Charente is a very versatile region with countless sunflower fields (July) and with historic cities such as Angoulême, Saintes and Poitiers where you can visit many churches and cathedrals and also roam the small alleys in search of a good restaurant. In addition, many walking and cycling trips are possible (directly from La Barre) and of course also excellent for canoeing because of its many rivers. In the immediate vicinity are several (small) beaches with lifeguards (July / August). Angoulême is also the "comic" capital of Europe with a true comic book museum and great comic book heroes as murals. At less than 20 km you will find Chateau Rochefoucauld, a castle from the 11th century, where you can get an extensive tour. We are on the edge of the Cognac region, so you will soon pass the various well-known, but also unknown small cognac houses, where you can often get a tour and, of course, also taste them.
