Additional information

Aruba is an independent country within the Kingdom of the Netherlands. Until 1986 the island was part of the Netherlands Antilles. Since 2010, the islands of Curaçao and Sint Maarten have the same status as Aruba. The other islands that were part of the Netherlands Antilles are nowadays an extraordinary municipality of the Netherlands. It was originally intended that Aruba would become completely independent from the Netherlands. However, this has never continued for several reasons.

Aruba was originally inhabited by the Arowaks, just like most of the islands in the Caribbean Sea. An Indian tribe from Venezuela. The island was first discovered by the Europeans at the end of the fifteenth century by the Spanish explorer Alonso de Ojeda. The Spaniards colonized the island and built some mines here. In 1636 the island was taken over by the Dutch. Except for the Napoleonic period, this has always remained so. At the beginning of the nineteenth century, gold was found on the island, which caused small gold fever. Aruba, however, reaped the benefits of this and, partly because of the income from the mines, will soon become a prosperous island.

Today the tourist industry is Aruba's main source of income. Every year more than one million tourists visit this beautiful Caribbean island. These mainly come here for the beautiful beaches and the beautiful underwater world. The places Eagle Beach and Palm Beach are the most popular destinations for tourists on Aruba. the capital Oranjestad is also a popular mooring place for cruise ships.
Almost all the sandy beaches of Aruba are located on the western and southern side of the island. Due to the continuous trade winds, the north coast mainly consists of rough rock formations. On the south coast are large beaches such as Eagle Beach and Palm Beach. These tropical sandy beaches are all you can expect in a sunny Caribbean destination: beautiful white beaches with palm trees, divi-trees and a view of a bright blue Caribbean Sea.
Two beaches that are certainly worth mentioning and where there are no hotels are Baby Beach and Renaissance Island.

Baby Beach is also one of the best places on Aruba to snorkel directly on the coast.
The popular beach of Baby Beach is popular with both tourists and locals. The shallow water is ideal for families with small children. On the beach are thatched umbrellas that provide some shade. You can go there
also rent beach chairs and windbreaks and there is a beach tent and some sanitary facilities. The sea at Baby Beach is also suitable for snorkeling. Less experienced snorkelers are advised to stay in the lagoon. The current outside can be particularly treacherous.
The capital of Aruba is Oranjestad. Oranjestad is located in the west of Aruba and counts only 35,000 inhabitants. For a capital city day is a low number, but for Aruba this means that one third of the total population lives in Oranjestad.
Oranjestad originated because in the eighteenth century people began to build houses around Fort Zoutman. This 17th-century fortress can still be seen in the center of Oranjestad. Over the years Oranjestad has become the economic and cultural heart of the island. Almost all major roads on Aruba lead to Oranjestad, because you are going to do your shopping here and because the international airport is located here, which offers residents of Aruba the opportunity to leave the island once in a while. After all, Aruba has no ferries.
For cruise passengers Oranjestad is the place where it is built. You will notice that Oranjestad is quite lively during the day, but that it gets quieter on the street after seven o'clock in the evening. Most of the tourists who celebrate their holiday on the island are mostly staying at Palm Beach or Eagle Beach.
