Holiday home on the Lycian Coast

Turkey’s western coast is not yet as well known as the Turkish Riviera or the other beaches on the Aegean Sea. However, this is changing all the time as the Lycian Coast is a perfect destination for a sun-drenched holiday in Turkey. As well as its splendid beaches, blue bays and green inland countryside, the Lycian Coast has plenty more to offer to visitors of all ages. Lively resorts like Marmaris and Fethye are interspersed with smaller villages like Ovacik-Hisaronu and Dalyan. After a lovely day at the seaside, all of these places have a great choice of open-air terraces flanking the boulevard where you can sit back, relax and look back on a lovely day. Yes, if you book a holiday home on the Lycian Coast, you can be sure of a delightfully relaxed stay. With Micazu, you always book directly with the owner, in your own language and at a great rate.

The Lycian Coast: surprisingly diverse

The long, often narrow beaches of the Lycian Coast are situated in a splendidly green landscape. There are many coves which are great for swimming and many also offer great opportunities for snorkelling. In most of the seaside resorts, you can sign up for some excellent diving excursions, and there is plenty of natural beauty to be found all along the Lycian Coast. Two of the major highlights include the lagoon near Ölüdeniz and the Lycian cave tombs at Dalyan. The latter are a good example of the rich culture and history of this region where many populations have left their imprint behind. The city of Marmaris in particular offers a wealth of attractions, both in the city and a little further away. Its 16th-century citadel, the Ottoman military living quarters and the Ibrahim Agha mosque dating back to 1789 are more than worth a visit.

Fun facts about the Lycian Coast

  • The Lycian Coast is named after the Lycians, the various highly cultured peoples that lived and ruled this area many years ago. Under the name of Lycia, this region was incorporated as a province of the Roman Empire.
  • A famous scion of Lycia was Nicholas of Myra, a bishop better known in the Low Countries under the name of Sinterklaas.
  • Dalyan beach is the breeding ground of the Caretta Caretta, a species of sea turtle that is threatened with extinction. This loggerhead turtle is also found in Crete, Cephalonia and several other Greek islands.
  • The Lycian Coast has a Mediterranean climate with dry, hot summers and mild winters. Temperatures are at their most pleasant in the months of April, May and October.
