Fun trivia about the Bernese Oberland

  • The Bernese Oberland is home to the highest railway station in Europe, near Jungfraujoch at an altitude of no less than 3,454 metres.
  • The Bernese Oberland region is named after the canton (and city) of Bern. The name goes all the way back to the foundation of the Oberland canton by Napoleon in 1798. In later years, Napoleon himself was to re-unite the Oberland with Bern.
  • The Bernese Oberland flag was designed by architect Bernhard von Rodt, who was born in the village of Wabern, and was officially recognised on the 29th May 1953 by the governmental council of the canton of Bern.
  • The Triftbrug is one of the most spectacular hanging pedestrian bridges in the Alps. The bridge is 170 metres long and ‘floats’ at an altitude of 100 metres above the surface of the Trift glacier.
