Albox is a municipality in the province of Almeria in Andalusia. Albox name comes from the Arabic word for forest and sounds similar to the Spanish expression for the forest - El Bosque. Albox is a typical Spanish town with narrow streets interspersed with small squares. The town is only five minutes drive from the popular resort of Mojacar and just half an hour from the beaches of Vera and Garrucha. Located between the better known towns of Baza and Huercal Overa the small town of Albox is flanked by the Sierra de las Estancias and the Sierra de los Filabres, mountain ranges which are surrounded by a beautiful landscape of olive groves, orchards of citrus trees and hills and valleys covered mainly by almond trees. The origin of Albox is medieval and the remains of an old fort can be found on a nearby hill. In 1503 it was destroyed by an earthquake and many of its historic buildings were lost. It has been completely reconstructed. Albox has all the facilities and service that one would expect from a modern small town: supermarkets, shops, banks, post office, restaurants, bars, schools and a 24-hour medical center. The nearest major hospital is in Huercal Overa, about 21 km away. There is a sports center and tennis club, which also has its own pool. Lorca is also called the "City of the Sun". It is a place where time has stood still. The city is dominated by its imposing castle. Our villa is a half hour from the beaches of Vera and Garrucha. The famous resort of Mojacar is 3 minutes away. The historic town of Vera Vera and accompanying resort of Vera Playa feature a mixture of culture and beach fun. Vera Playa is a popular place for nudists (mile naturist beach). It also provides excellent activities such as water sports and golf. Vera finds some buildings that betray a Roman and Arabic past: the Church of the rebirth, the Saint Augustine Church and an interesting archaeological museum. The Saturday market is well worth a visit. Garrucha Garrucha is a beautiful sailing and fishing village where you can enjoy excellent beaches and seafood restaurants. A walk across the vast and lively boulevard is a pleasant time spending. Mojacar The popular town of Mojacar is divided into 2 parts. The actual village of Mojacar is on a hill, and is traditionally Spanish with narrow, steep streets. It has some cozy taverns, plazas and restaurants. The more tourist Mojacar seafront has a beach promenade with mostly restaurants, taverns and pubs.
