Silves is a delightful and traditional Portuguese town from which you can take an enjoyable day trip to coastal towns of the western Algarve. The peaceful ambiance of the city does not reflect the historical importance of Silves, which was the capital and defensive stronghold of the entire region during the rule of the North African moors of the Algarve (700-1200 ad). Remnants of this illustrious era can be seen in Silves in the huge red brick castle. Today, Silves is an unhurried and charming town that is a far cry from the hectic pace of life along the coastal region of the Algarve. Silves has a lot to offer to tourists and is considered the best destination for a day trip from the major seaside resorts. Silves is a fascinating destination, ideal for visitors who want to learn about the early history of the region. During the Moorish era, Silves was an important trading location and this strategic importance was bitterly defended with the construction of the mighty castle and the solid city walls. Interestingly, Silves was also an important port, with a constant stream of boats departing for the Mediterranean or North Africa. Today, the flow of the Arada River has changed and decreased, now only suitable for tourist boats, but it provides a cooling backdrop for the city.
