Villa Sabina

Villa Sabina is located in the nature reserve around the river Farfa. Yet it is not far from the cute village of Castelnuovo di Farfa (1.5 km), with a medieval center of narrow streets and gates (the borgo). The town has an artistic Olive Oil Museum, as the center of the famous olive culture of the Sabina.

The famous Abbey of Farfa, dating from the 6th century, is a few minutes' drive or an hour's walk from the house, on the other side of the village. Farfa Abbey was one of the most powerful in Europe in the Middle Ages: it was an imperial abbey (Abbazia Imperiale), dating back to the time of Charlemagne who spent the night here when he traveled to Rome for his coronation as emperor by the Pope.

Farfadal and the Sabina
The Farfa Valley is a nature reserve (Monumento Naturale Gole del Farfa). From the Villa Sabina you can descend directly to the river but also walk to the Farfa a little further downstream, through dense forests to a very old (Roman) bridge over the Farfa and remains of a medieval water mill. From the house you can clearly see the villages of Mompeo (northwest) and Monte Santa Maria (southeast). But also Frasso Sabino, Monteleone and Ginestra can be seen, a little further away (east). Dozens of medieval villages in the Sabina are within easy reach (such as Toffia, Montenero, Catino, Casperia). You can walk everywhere and in Monte Santa Maria you can go horseback riding.

Excursions
Of course, the Villa is a good base for excursions a little further away: in a good hour you can reach the city center of Rome, but also Viterbo and the southern part of Umbria with the beautiful city of Orvieto. A little further Spoleto or Lake Bracciano, L'Aquila and Abruzzo. The old town of Rieti is only 30 km away, at the foot of Monte Terminillo (2217 m), where there is good skiing in winter, as well as on a number of slopes in the direction of L'Aquila.

At approx. A 20-minute drive away is the Fara train station in Sabina, which can be reached up to max. four times an hour with Rome and Fiumicino Airport. This is also very practical if you want to receive guests during your stay, for example older children who come to visit.
