The gîte is located on a domain of half a hectare of wild flower meadow, on the edge of a forest.
The comfortable house, made of straw bales and loam, is equipped with everything for a relaxing holiday, including a well-equipped kitchen, underfloor heating and a bathroom with bath. There is a large covered private terrace and around is a garden with spectacular views.
The cottage fits perfectly into the unspoilt landscape. No wonder when you consider that most of the ecological building materials come from the immediate vicinity: wood from the Pyrenees, straw bales from the surrounding grain fields, sand from the nearby river l'Hers and clay from our own land. The walls are made of loam and straw bales, which ensures a pleasant indoor climate. The landlord built the house himself and is happy to tell you more about this special and sustainable way of building.
This gîte is the ideal base to discover the Cathar country. From the terrace you even have a view of the last Cathar stronghold, Chateau de Montsegur! Just fifteen minutes away is the medieval town of Mirepoix. Here you will find a bustling square, a market where you can taste plenty of local products and numerous restaurants and terraces.
Furthermore, the region offers caves, theme parks for young and old and beautiful medieval cities such as Foix, Carcassonne and Saint-Lizier. Hiking trails start directly from the site, including to the Touyre river (one kilometre) with picnic benches, several climbing walls and natural pools.
Or take a dip in Lac Montbel (five kilometres) with its sandy beach and watersports. In spring and autumn, many birdwatchers and nature lovers visit this area (in May for the rare orchids), in the winter months you can enjoy the winter sports areas (Mont d'Olmes, Ax-les-Thermes).
