Holiday house

Holiday Home Lot Dordogne Cahors

Super sweet stone house under the oak trees. Ideal for those who love nature, peace and privacy. Charming because of its simplicity and beautiful atmosphere. Romantic! The house is completely secluded in the forest. Meter-thick walls, so cool in the summer, warm in the winter. The weather is still wonderful here until November.
Good fireplace and central heating, good beds, new luxury kitchen and new bathroom. The house is completely isolated in the forest. If you get up early you have a chance of seeing the deer.

Design
Spacious living room with a seating area by the fireplace. Cozy dining area. In the salon there is also a lovely sofa bed (high quality) that can be folded in one movement.

Spacious bedroom with good beds (auping).

At the end of 2023, my house received a new kitchen with induction cooking. The new natural stone bathroom has a walk-in shower.

Outside you sit under the trees, in the shade with a beautiful view of the grounds. 2 hectares of forest where you can move freely.

Good barbecue and a nice sitting area outside.

Environment
The house is located in the middle of the Lot river valley and in the Le Quercy nature reserve, on a hill. Beautiful walking area. Everything in the Dordogne is close by, but you avoid the tourist crowds here.

Just a 10-hour drive from Utrecht or a flight to Toulouse and you will find an oasis of peace in this poetic landscape of farmlands, lined meadows and forest.

Swimming pool and lakes five kilometers away or go for a swim in the Lot River - a magical experience!

The area is also great for cycling and there is a lot to do: the museum of the sculptor Zadkine, prehistoric caves, canoeing, tennis, golf, climbing in the phenomenal climbing forest near Pradines or simply follow the wine routes (the Malbec of Cahors grows here ).

Cahors is a fifteen minute drive. Toulouse is a bit further, but this beautiful, historic and most innovative city in France is more than worth the drive!

Small-scale agriculture and forests determine the landscape. There are regional markets, festivities and festivals nearby. The film festival in Gindou is great! Cahors has many music events. There is a weekly market in Cazals on Sunday mornings. Go to the market in Catus on Tuesday morning for the specialties.

Cities such as Cahors and Figeac are fun to visit, as are the caves in Cougnac and Peche Merle. And furthermore Rocamadour, the city on a rock and place of pilgrimage, the crack in the earth near Padirac, the village of Saint-Cirq-Lapopie, Souillac.

The house is a good base for exploring the Dordogne. The house is just on the edge, but it is less touristy in the summer. Don't forget the Ossip Zadkine museum in neighboring Les Arques (five kilometers). More beautiful than the museum in Paris and you can also follow the sculptor's daily walking routes.

Since my childhood I have been in the French Lot and I have become attached to the landscape of fringed meadows and rolling hills. If we are not in our holiday home, we would like to give others the pleasure of enjoying the peace, space and the view on the oak trees. You quickly imagine yourself in a little paradise. After a period of hard work (nowadays as a Dutch teacher) I am usually completely zen again in one day. Try it out too!

Additional information

The water is super clean, the environment is magical! You swim in endless running water that has found its way through two mountain plateaus. Swimming in the river Lot should definitely be done once if you spend a week @huisjesindelot. From the beach Antinéa of the town of Douelle you can make a big swim or you just swim to the other side, where you swing back to the rope that hangs there. Good for hours of fun. Or you rent a canoe or water bike here! Always fun. Afterwards you let yourself dry up on the sunbathing area or you are looking for a place under the trees. There is a small beach tent where you can drink or eat something. Sometimes there is live music on Sunday afternoons. Also delicious are the pizzas from the pizzeria in Douelle. Just pick up and eat at the water if you have forgotten the picnic basket! Delicious! Baignade d'Antinéa, route du Payras Douelle
Musee Zadkine is a beautiful museum with the best works of one of the greatest sculptors of the last century - coincidentally (!) He lived and worked less than 5 kilometers from our house. Zadkine also made the war memorial The devastated city for Rotterdam, the human figure without a heart. His work in Les Arques is emotional, powerful, intense, even better than his work in the Zadkine museum in Paris, I think personally. Who does not know anything about art understands these images! Just watch and feel! The beauty of Les Arques is that you can experience how the artist once worked here. Visit his studio and house or follow the paths he took on his daily walks through the forest. He was often looking for a nice piece of wood to work on. Do not forget to check out the pièta in the chapel! The sadest pièta I have ever seen. Made of wood from the Quercy indeed! Many of Zadkine's sculptures are displayed outside and give allure to the artists' village (many artists in residence here!). Interesting is also the film that you can watch. Zadkine tells what he found in Les Arques when he bought a house in the thirties after his Parisian period with his wife Valentine Prax, also an artist by the way. He talks about the solidarity that he found, between people, but also with his soil, nature, the animals that also live there, the seasons that flow, the beautiful landscape, with life actually that just so much more illustrative essence reveals. Just outside the village in a former school is a very good restaurant with a star. Here you can eat super tasty outside for not too much money.
This hole in the earth at Padirac, a village not far from Rocamadour, is one of the most extraordinary geological curiosities in France. It used to be seen before the portal to hell, hence no one dared to go down for a long time. Nowadays you can simply cover the 110 meters with a staircase or lift. Then you take a boat to sail over the underground rivers. Go there early, because there are sometimes queues in the summer. In the cave you will find beautiful stalactite formations and the trip over the underground rivers is a fantastic experience. As if you cross the Styx in a boat. Beautiful stalagmites and stalactites here! Combine the cave with a visit to the pilgrimage town of Rocamadour to make sure that you are not in hell. Gouffre de Padirac, lieu-dit Le Gouffre Padirac
The possibilities for hiking and cycling in the valley of the Lot are endless. You can just walk out the door and start, but it is perhaps more fun to link a theme to the walk. Download the app from the office the tourisme of Cahors on your phone and choose one of the many themes that have been worked out. For example, take a trip through vineyards and truffle places or take a walk along the menhirs. Walk along the pilgrimage route to Santiago de Compostella, follow in the footsteps of André Breton, follow the art route past 10 artists from the Lot, cross the valley of the Lot and the Cele or choose one of the mountain bike or cycle routes with an extra challenge. In our house there is also a book with walks that are described in Dutch. Put on good shoes. You do not really need more. Bonne ballad!
Not as old as the Chauvet caves, which are 37,000 years old, but the caves of Pech-Merle, which were created 25,000 years ago, are certainly so spectacular, especially because of the fascinating wall paintings that you can see here. In a period of 5,000 years, mammoths, horses, bison, ibex, deer, hands, human figures and enigmatic signs were placed on the cave walls. It is assumed that the paintings were part of an undisclosed ritual that also involved fire. Without fire, it must have been pitch dark in the subterranean rooms. The Peche-Merle tunnel system covers about 2 kilometers and is phenomenal: beautiful limestone formations and large subterranean chambers. The caves were discovered in 1922 by two teenagers who shared their discovery with the local pastor, who happened to be an avid speleologist (this is a serious hobby in France!). Above ground is now a museum in which the pastor's finds are exhibited. Reserve a ticket in advance. There are only 700 people per day in the caves. Grotte du Pech-Merle, Cabrerets 6. Overcome your fear of heights in the phenomenal high climbing forest of Pradines! You can not see it so well in this picture but the trees in this climbing forest are really mega-eyes. The various courses that have been set out are therefore literally an acrobatic challenge at top level. It is a fantastic experience to climb together with your family or friends and to find your own boundaries. Incidentally, there are also easy courses, you can build it slowly. No more a great trip with which you can still surprise even teenage children who have already seen and experienced everything. Strangely enough you see very few adults hanging in the trees, while there is no reason to stay on the ground. I myself have tried one of the courses and it is very easy to do - even with fear of heights! You have to be able to see that your children are hanging about thirty meters above you and then you triumphantly encourage them with a sweetheart: "Come on, mama. This can be done for you! " Fortunately, I have no problem with that at all. Accrobranche, as the French call it, is highly recommended to give the family feeling a boost. You can do a lot more in the park Capnature in Pradines, a suburb of Cahors, for example, laser gating, paintballing and kayaking. Capnature Parc de Loisirs, Chemin de l'Ile Pradines.

A wonderful, relaxed provincial town with a beautiful southern atmosphere. Cahors has a historic city center (Medieval, but there are also Roman remains such as an amphitheater). Interesting are the Pont Valentré, a medieval fortress bridge, and the cathedral. And of course there are also more contemporary attractions. You can shop very well; there are a lot of (music) festivals and night markets in the summer and there is a large covered market where all possible delicacies can be bought. We always drive straight to Lisa Bistro on the Avenue Gambetta, the main street of Cahors. The wifi is very good here. You will greatly appreciate something like that when you are longer in France. Cahors is the capital of the department and has a regional function. The swimming pool is unparalleled and you will find hypermarches on the edges of Cahors. Cahors also has a number of organic supermarkets. If you have less budget, the Liddle at the exit Pradines is a very good option. Meat for the barbecue is best at La boucherie de l'avenir. Near the station. For halal meat you can go to Chez Hakim. Incidentally, the nearest large supermarket is that of Espère. An Intermarché. Also worth mentioning is the location of Cahors. Right in the armpit of the meandering Lot, surrounded by mountains. Magnificent!
