Domaine Pouzoult, Gîte l'Escalier

At a travel distance of just one day, you imagine yourself in another world with beautiful hilly landscape and quiet villages. Our gîte is located on a private property of 2.5 ha bordered by a row of trees. It is located in the beautiful region of Le Berry (Indre). This area, not yet discovered by mass tourism, is very attractive for walkers and cyclists, but also for people looking for peace and quiet.

Domaine Pouzoult is a small ensemble of three buildings, including our house and two large barns. It is originally an old farm and here and there you can still find the original elements. One of the barns consists of three parts, two of which are private. The third part has been transformed into a gîte. This gîte is accessible via a separate entrance and there is plenty of space for parking your car. The gîte is situated in such a way that you live there alone, as it were. You are not bothered by the owners.

The house located in lieu-dit Pouzoult belongs to the municipality of Sazeray, a small village with 320 inhabitants. In the nearby village of St. Sévère sur Indre you have a bakery, butcher, post office, a small supermarket and a restaurant where you can eat deliciously.

Our gîte has been carefully decorated and equipped with every comfort, including WiFi. You have a well-equipped kitchen with a dishwasher, espresso machine, kettle and a combined oven/microwave. Kitchen linen is provided by us. The four-person dining table is located near the kitchen area.
Furthermore, the gîte offers a spacious living room, with a cozy sitting area (sofa and two chairs) near the original fireplace with wood stove. A small bookcase, some side tables and a television (canal digital) complete the whole.

An iron spiral staircase leads to the bedroom floor. This has a comfortable double bed. There is plenty of cupboard space, also various hooks for hanging towels. We have two bathrobes available, which guests can use. The beds are made before arrival and the bath towels are ready for you. The en-suite bathroom has two sinks and a spacious rain shower. The toilet is separately siturated.

In front of the house is a private terrace that overlooks a row of trees and the land. Sun loungers, parasol and a dining table with two chairs are provided. A little further away, at the end of the meadow is an old station bench. From here you have a beautiful view of the valley. Lovely place to sit down with a cup of coffee or a glass of wine. You will also find a nice fire pit, where you can view the Milky Way in the evening. Fancy a game of pétanque? That is also possible! The balls are already ready.
Breakfast and/or meal can be discussed on site.

Good to know: the spiral staircase is narrow (52 cm) and not suitable for people with walking difficulties. The passage to the toilet is 41 cm. Our gîte is a so-called 'adults only' location and unfortunately, pets are not allowed.

We have been living in Sazeray, France since the summer of 2019. In the Netherlands we increasingly felt the need for space and silence. And also a different life, no stress, no 'rat race'. Here we have more time for each other and discover the charm of La Douce France every day. After looking at almost 85 houses, we both fell in love with this ensemble: the barns, the green courtyard, the space, the garden...

We would like to share this beauty with you and hope you enjoy it as much as we do!

Location & area recommendations

Additional information

Sylvia from The Hague, Visited in October 2019 Highly recommended A place where it is still really quiet and where you can enjoy an unimaginable starry sky in the evening. A warm reception (to sound the alarm) and a gite all ready to receive the guests. The gite is carefully decorated with beautiful furniture (good chairs), beds are made with beautiful bed linen, there is an abundance of luxury towels, wood for the fireplace, the kitchen is fully equipped, and above all there is a lot of space to away. The gite is large enough for 2 people, the stairs are the eye catcher and if you prefer not to go up with your suitcase, Ton will help you with his ingenious hoist system. A spacious wardrobe in the bedroom! All you need to bring (except your suitcase with clothes) is a stack of books. In the area the famous quiet small and less small villages. Many castles and especially beautiful nature. Gitta from Nieuwegein, Visited in October 2019 Fantastic stay in a quiet area. A lovely place to relax. Luxury Gite, equipped with all comforts and comfortable beds. The owners will make you feel welcome and relax in a peaceful environment. There is a nice garden with a lot of privacy. If you want to know more about the area or if you would like something to do with the stay, the owners are ready for you. We had a wonderful week. Christine from Switzerland, Visited September 2019 Tranquility and Peacefulness We had a wonderful weekend here beginning of September, relaxing and rejuvenating. The quietness and views across the fields and rises were so beautiful. The accommodation was lovely. An open living space with kitchen tastefully decorated below and above the open spacious bedroom, en suite bathroom with a spacious shower. . Oh, and did I say tranquil, owls hooting at night and such a terrific nights sleep to be had. The hosts were such lovely people and very keen to share their knowledge of what to do in the vicinity ..... we'll be back! Dominique from The Hague, Visited in August 2019 Restful A wonderful week spent in this gite. The luxury of the house, the tranquility and the use of fine sun loungers have certainly contributed to this. The host and hostess are very friendly. Recommended.
The Berry is a beautiful area with varied landscape: hills, valleys, reservoirs and forests. If you are lucky you will see a few deer grazing on one of the many meadows. Are you looking for culture, then you can indulge yourself. There are plenty of castles, churches, village squares, all with their own history. A must is the castle of Sarzay; a second tip is the house of George Sand (writer). We ourselves are particularly fond of the monastery gardens in Orsan. In the summer months, a (music) festival is held in almost every village. The famous concerts in Nohan-Vic attract thousands of people.
In the beautiful surroundings there are plenty of opportunities for sports activities. There are beautiful marked hiking trails and the varied landscape with hills and valleys is attractive for mountain bikers or cyclists. If you prefer to stay by the water, you can visit Pouligny Notre Dame, where there is a small swimming pond. Try your skills on the water ski or follow the BMX trail. A little further away from us you can relax on the reservoir of Sidiailles, where you can rent a canoe. If you are looking for more adventure, go scrambling, climbing and strumming from one tree to another. A large course has been plotted. Sun worshipers can find a quiet spot here and spend the whole day here. There is a small bar that sells drinks and snacks. For golf enthusiasts, there is a beautiful 18-hole course in Pouligny Notre Dame. With a hilly landscape and water features, golfing really becomes an experience here.
Typical French villages, beautiful squares, terraces ... that can also be found here in the area. There are many small picturesque villages, all of which have at least a square and a church. Often they still have a tourist or historical building or memorial. In the immediate vicinity, St. Sévère sur Indre is a nice little village to walk through. Known by Jacques Tati, who made a film in which all villagers played a role. Behind the square, in a street, you suddenly see a door that gives access to an old park, once belonging to the castle. If you are looking for larger towns then La Châtre is a must. There are nice shops here and a few lovely terraces. La Châtre is 20 minutes away from us. A little further away there are larger cities, such as Montluçon and Chateauroux.
If you feel like eating out, then Relais du Facteur is a must. This restaurant in St. Sévère sur Indre offers an extensive lunch and dinner menu at an average price. There are several restaurants and terraces in La Châtre.
