The current château was built in 1883, but there was already a large house in the village of Les Forges since the middle of the 15th century, when the lord of the domain, one Antoine De Payle, built a 'maison forte' on this site.

At the Battle of Poitiers (30 km) in October 732, Charles Martel of the Franks defeated a Moorish army under Emir Abdul Rahman. The outcome of this battle halted the northward expansion of Islam from Spain and is traditionally associated with the beginning of the Reconquista
