AREA
The mountains of the Cantal
Most Dutch people know the Dordogne, the Ardèche, Puy de Dome and the Lot, but not the Cantal, which is right in the middle of them. Even for France connoisseurs, the Cantal is a real surprise and discovery. The Cantal is located in the volcanic area of the Massif Central. The highest peak is the Plomb du Cantal (1855m) and the Puy Mary (1800m). The Cantal = nature: green-blue mountains, rivers, lakes, waterfalls. The mountain landscape was once formed by volcanic eruptions and the scouring of glaciers.
Salers (15 minutes drive)
Partly thanks to its medieval atmosphere, the town is considered by connoisseurs to be one of the most beautiful places in the region. Some even rank Salers among the most beautiful places in all of France. On the various squares and in the streets there are various shops, studios and of course cozy restaurants.
Aurillac (35 minutes drive)
The capital is Aurillac, a beautiful city worth seeing with an old core, shops, restaurants, boutiques and a large cultural offer: music, museums, horse racing and the fantastic Théâtre de Rue in August.
Hiking in the mountains
The Cantal is dotted with walking routes from one hour, half a day to multi-day tours (hut tours). So, the hiking boots are a must. Walking on the ridges, due to the lack of forests, you soon get the idea that you are walking in the High Alps. The real climbers get their money's worth... or you take the chairlift (Lioran) or the large cabin lift (Plomp du Cantal) and just walk...
A cycling paradise
In the Cantal you will only encounter the semi / professional cyclist in the mountains. It is no coincidence that the Cantal is almost always included in the Tour de France.
Canoeing, horse riding, fishing
Within an hour's drive you can canoe on the Dordogne, the Truyère or the Lot. And what about horseback riding in the mountains or fishing for trout.
Aquatics
Everywhere you can swim in the large lakes where you can still find the freshwater lobsters. Surfing, catamaran sailing, water skiing, everything is possible and for rent.
Castles and churches
The Cantal is dotted with Romanesque churches that are among the most beautiful in France and castles and manor houses are everywhere. A hundred meters from the farm is the castle St. Pol. Several castles and villages (including Jussac) have their own festivities in the summer with knight games, son et lumières, pilgrimage parades, fire games, etc.
