Rest and space are the magic words: at the edge of the hameau d'Apremont, right on the footpath to the Ax Vert, lies our lovely, characterful holiday home. This 19th century family home with slate roof has a spacious living room with exposed beams and original clay tiles on the floor, a dining table for eight people, a piano and a cozy wood stove in the comfortable seating area. Through French doors you enter the spacious French kitchen, which is fully equipped. And where does the croissant taste better than in the kitchen with a view over the hills! On the ground floor there is also the bathroom with two sinks, a rain shower and a separate toilet. In the utility room is the washing machine and an extra countertop, for example for processing your own fruit. On the rocking chair in the conservatory you have a 270 degree view!

A wooden staircase takes you to the first floor with three spacious double bedrooms, all carefully finished with wooden beams and floors and shutters in front of the windows, with lovely views over the valley. There are two more single beds on the spacious landing. There is plenty of space for putting down a cot.

The house is equipped with Wifi. In the living room there is a large TV screen with self-selected programs via Chromecast; in the kitchen there is a smaller television with French channels.

Around the house is a large garden completely fenced with French sheep fence. The garden offers a lot of privacy and is, as it were, in the middle of a painting. In the garden there is a shed with firewood and a "batiment" with garden furniture and a few things to play attributes. There are various fruit bushes and in the shade of the plum and cherry trees it is wonderful to laze. Choose one of the terraces for a delicious breakfast and by the evening the solid stone barbecue beckons. In the evening you can make music at the fire pit or enjoy the breathtaking starry sky that you can see here so well. For the big and small children we have a cable car in the garden and since the spring of 2018 also a jeu-de-boules course .....

Let us introduce ourselves: we are Gaston and Mieke Gigase from Valkenburg. After traveling through France with our four children for years, we discovered this unique spot in the Thiérache in 2015. In the Netherlands we are both practicing veterinarians and it is a pleasure to be in 2.5 hours of driving in the peace and relaxation of our house at the Ax Vert. Now that we have realized our home and garden ideas after 3 years, we would like to give others the opportunity to share this pleasure!

Location & tips

Additional information

Upon arrival you will find a documentation folder in our house with useful information about the area. We can give you a small advance: Via the footpath the Ax Vert you can walk to Rozoy-sur-Serre in half an hour, where you will find 2 boulangeries, a small neighborhood supermarket and a large Intermarché. There is also a pizza / kebab chez Stan and the cozy restaurant Entre Nous (reservation required). The area is ideal for hiking, cycling / mountain biking and horseback riding. By car you can drive the historic route past the fortified churches of various villages, the route des Eglises Fortifiées. From April to October there is always a brocante to visit on Sundays. Culture lovers can indulge in the little church of Jeantes, painted entirely by Charles Eyk in 1962, or during a trip to the historic cities of Laon and Reims. There are plenty of activities nearby such as swimming, karting, horseback riding, trail running, quad biking, donkey walking, a visit to the regional museum etc. The tourism in the Thiérache and Parque Nationale is in full development. For those who want to look further: in 2 hours you are in Paris.
