One of the best places I have ever stayed! Imagine waking up to a grove of olive trees and plump grapes dangling from the vines, as you look out enormous wood windows, with sunlight streaming in and the scent of fresh oranges,...

One of the best places I have ever stayed! Imagine waking up to a grove of olive trees and plump grapes dangling from the vines, as you look out enormous wood windows, with sunlight streaming in and the scent of fresh oranges, drifting across wide open beams, and you think “Ahhh…this is the real Portugal!” I rented this beautiful country house for three months to work on a book and this is exactly how I felt every day, such peace and beauty and a slice of Portugal that everyone should experience. The house itself is beautiful and filled with everything you need to feel at home, which is exactly how I felt the moment I entered, and every room so comfortable and inviting and wonderfully decorated. It is one of those magical places you never forget and don’t want to leave. The sound of church bells ringing across the fields where you can wander those old country roads and see the faces of those who are the real Portugal, a beautiful river nearby to swim, a fabulous weekly market in the neighboring town, and a little village, right up the road, with some of the kindest people I have ever met. And, oh, that fresh bread in a bag that you hang from a tree. Just imagine that! When the bread man drives by and sees it, he then fills it with some of the best bread I have ever had and miss. If this is the kind of experience you would love to have, don’t even hesitate. Just pack your bags and book Casa do Serrador. The owner, Victoria, has created such a beautiful place, and her property manager, Miranda, was there in a blink to help with anything I needed. It is truly a special place and I will always be grateful for the fabulous time I spent there.

From December 30 to January 6 we had been on holiday in this only house and had a very good time there. In the morning the frost was on the ground and a few hours later we were sitting on the veranda in the sun with our breakfast! The oranges were showing off on the trees. In the evening, when the sun disappeared, it was cold, but with the gas heater we managed to keep it nice and warm inside. Walking in this area is wonderful and with Miranda as a guide it is a party.
